PRESENT SIMPLE / PRESENT CONTINUOUS

 Review the Present Simple and when we use it  Review the Present Continuous and its uses  Discuss the differences between the two  Do exercises you practice what we’ve learned IN THIS LESSON, WE’RE GOING TO:

When do we use the Present Simple? 1. REPEATED ACTIONS -The action can be a habit, a hobby, a daily event, a scheduled event or something that happens often. It can also be something a person often forgets or usually does not do. 2. FACTS OR GENERALIZATIONS - indicate the speaker believes that a fact was true before, is true now, and will be true in the future. It is not important if the speaker is correct about the fact. It is also used to make generalizations about people or things. ‘My cat brushes her teeth every morning’ ‘Cats brush their teeth’

3.SCHEDULED EVENTS -to talk about scheduled events in the near future. This is most commonly done when talking about public transportation, but it can be used with other scheduled events as well. THE_________________ LEAVES/ARRIVES AT ______________ THE_________________ STARTS/ENDS AT ______________

4. WITH NON CONTINUOUS AND MIXED VERBS These verbs are usually things you cannot see somebody doing. These verbs are rarely used in continuous tenses. They include:  Abstract Verbs: to be, to want, to cost, to seem, to need, to care, to contain, to owe, to exist  Possession Verbs: to possess, to own, to belong...  Emotion Verbs: to like, to love, to hate, to dislike, to fear, to envy, to mind... Examples: He is needing help now. Not Correct/ He needs help now. Correct He is wanting a drink now. Not Correct/ He wants a drink now. Correct REMEMBER: ADVERB PLACEMENT always, only, never, ever, still, just BEFORE THE VERB e.g. I always go to work at 08am / I never eat lunch / She only exercises on Wednesdays

When do we use the Present Continuous? 1. FOR THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING NOW /at this very moment. It can also be used to show that something is not happening now. [EXCEPT FOR NON CONTINUOUS AND MIXED VERBS] E.G. I’m eating dinner / My friend is swimming / My boss is interviewing secretaries TO BE [am/is/are] + present participle + ING 2. FOR LONGER ACTIONS IN PROGRESS - to say that we are in the process of doing a longer action which is in progress; even though we are not doing it at this exact second. E.G. My sister is studying to become a lawyer / I’m applying for my American tourist Visa 3. REPETITION AND IRRITATION - with words such as always/constantly/ expresses the idea that something irritating or shocking often happens. Notice that the meaning is like Simple Present, but with negative emotion. Remember to put the words "always" or "constantly" BETWEEN "to be" and "verb + ing." E.G. She’s always interrupting me / He is constantly leaving dirty dishes in the sink!

THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS:  CANNOT BE USED WITH NON-CONTINUOUS AND MIXED VERBS. E.G. You are loving this chocolate ice cream NOT CORRECT / You love this chocolate ice cream CORRECT  ADVERB PLACEMENT AFTER ‘to be’ BUT BEFORE THE ‘-ing’ E.G. You are never smiling in the morning / You’re only driving because its Sunday.
