5 PRESENT CONTINUOUS AND PRESENT SIMPLE PRESENT CONTINUOUS - The water is boiling. Can you turn it off? -Let’s go out. It isn’t raining now. -What are you doing? -The population of the world is increasing very fast. TEMPORARY SITUATIONS -I’m living with some friends until I find a place of my own. -You’re working hard today. PRESENT SIMPLE -Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius. -It doesn’t rain very much in summer. -What do you usually do at weekends? -Every day the population of the world increases by about 200 000 people. PERMANENT SITUATIONS -My parents live in London. -John works hard most of the time.

6 SOME VERBS DESCRIBE STATES AND DO NOT NORMALLY HAVE CONTINUOUS FORMS: I like French films. (NOT I’m liking French films) Some verbs describe states and are usually only used in the Present Simple: Verbs of thinking (e.g. believe, think, understand, know, seem, mean) Verbs of emotions (e.g. like, love, hate, wish, want, hope) Verbs of possession (e.g. belong, have, own, contain, cost) Verbs of the senses (e.g. look, hear, taste, smell, feel)
