Presentation transcript:

Pinch and coil pot construction Ceramic Hand-Building Techniques

Pinch Pots A bowl or vessel created with one piece of clay An opening is created by pressing your thumb into the center of the ball of clay Pinch using your thumb and fingers starting at the base and working your way up to the top The finished product should look something like this

Coil Pot A vessel created by attaching and smoothing coils of clay onto a base created from a trimmed slab of clay. The shape of the base determines the shape of the coil pot. At least one side of the coils need to be smoothed to secure the structure, but both can be smoothed if desired. To make the pot expand, place the coils on the outer edge of the rim. To make the pot shrink, place the coils on the inner edge of the rim. REMEMBER, always score and slip when attaching a coil from a new piece of clay.

Hand-Building Project Requirements Design Challenge: How can you create two separate ceramic pieces that interact to form one complete work of art? CREATE 2 POTS THAT INTERACT IN SOME WAY 1 PINCH POT (3” HIGH, 3” DIAMETER) 1 COIL POT (5” HIGH, 3” DIAMETER) SURFACE INCISED DESIGNS 2 CONSTRUCTED ELEMENTS (ATTACHED BY SCORRING AND SLIPPING) ALL SURFACES SMOOTHED WITH WATER AND A BRUSH AT LEAST 3 DIFFERENT COLOR GLAZES
