1 January 7, 2013 You Need – pen/pencil – Vocabulary Books What we’re doing: Vocab and intro to first clay project

2 Ceramics 101

3 Ceramics: Pottery or clay sculpture fired at high temperatures to make them strong.

4 Vessel: A hollow container for holding something. Can also be “pottery”

5 Pinch Pot: Vessel created with basic pinching technique. Walls should be even, thin and smooth

6 Wedge: To knead clay before used to remove air pockets.

7 Coil Construction: Long, snake-like ropes of clay used to make forms

8 Slab Construction: Joining shapes cut from thick sheets of damp clay.

9 Score & Slip: Crossed scratches in clay & add water to join together pieces

10 Leather hard Stage of the clay that is best for attaching pieces and carving.

11 Carving Images or lettering that are cut into the surface of the material

12 Greenware: Clay that is completely air dry but not fired. FRAGILE!

13 Fire: process of cooking clay making it impermeable and completely dry

14 Kiln: Oven that can reach very high temperatures

15 Bisque: Clay that has been fired once but not glazed.

16 Glaze: Thin coating of minerals which produces a glassy transparent or colored coating on bisque ware.

17 First Clay Project: Create a Box that has a specific emotional quality without using faces, pictures or words (NO HEARTS! NO RAIN or TEARS!) The outside of the box will CONTRAST with the inside of your box You must be able to see the inside of the box from the outside. Use attached textures & shapes to express your idea Colors will be available but limited

36 What’s next? Turn in your notes Continue building your box Keep it moist & workable or else you’ll have to start again. Build the box quickly but spend time shaping & perfecting later.
