 Hand building  Wheel Throwing Pinch potslab coil

 A variety of earthy materials formed by the breakdown of granite rocks over millions of years.  PLASTIC CLAY: moldable, moist clay that can be formed into a variety of things

 Clay that is starting to dry but has not done so completely; firm clay  Feels cool and damp  Very fragile, breaks easily  Can be scraped and smoothed

Clay that is completely dried out (bone dry) and is ready to be fired in the kiln. very light brown color

 Clay that has been fired in the kiln once and is ready to be painted or glazed  White color  Hard as a rock

Clay drying soft hard

 A special oven or furnace that can reach very high temperatures and is used to bake, or fire clay.

Firing is the process of baking and hardening pottery. Clay is hardened by heating it to a high temperature, thus fusing the clay particles. Temperature in kilns can reach 2500 degrees.

 Scratching the surface of two clay pieces when joining them together  Scoring is similar to a tire tread

 a mixture of clay and water that serves as a glue and is placed on scored areas of clay.

 If slip acts as an adhesive, and scoring makes two pieces of clay like the opposite sides of a zipper, then they should stick together permanently.

 Long snake-like ropes of clay that can be joined together to form a pot, bowl, or vase

 The oldest form of pottery  Native Americans – respected the earth and only used what they needed to make their pottery. How wasteful is our culture?  Coils were pinched together to hold water and food.  Originally used the “coil and scrape” method. Then fired on a bed of coals.

There are a variety of coil shapes and types…  Spiral  Zig-zag  Lines  Circles  Squares  triangles

Putting coils together to make something (bowl, vase, pot)

 Joining shapes together; thick sheets of clay.  Roll out like a pancake then cut out the desired shape.

 liquid glass; painted onto bisqueware pottery; when fired in the kiln it forms a translucent or colored covering.  If you choose glaze – your project needs to be fired 2 times!

 Draw 3 thumbnail sketches = Quiz  Bring in a bowl from home to use as a mold.  Inside the bowl, attach your clay design (coil or slab) in an interesting & creative way.  Remember to slip and score!  Smooth edges and bumps.  Set out to dry  Fire in the kiln  Paint: Choose glaze, watercolor, acrylic  Fire in the kiln again if you glazed.
