The inventor Abraham Darby invented Coke smelting in 1709 during the industrial revolution. Instead of burning charcoal he started burning coke. This was important to Britain because charcoal was becoming scarce. Since replacing charcoal with coke it made melting metals in factory quicker.

He had built a house for himself in Coalbrookdale but did not live to occupy it. His widow died only a few months later!
