Developmental Stages Humans develop in distinct stages. During each stage humans experience 5 different types of changes: Physical Intellectual Emotional Social Moral

Developmental Tasks Developmental Tasks- Skills and abilities that are mastered as part of the maturing process. Walking Talking Thinking logically are just a few

Infancy Birth -1 year old. Changes that occur in this stage occur more rapidly than in any other stage. Physical-Several reflexes, hand eye-coordination, roll over, sit up, crawl, and stand Intellectual- connecting sounds with moving objects, crying to express needs, Emotional- Bonding with parents Social & Moral-Smiling, recognizing faces and names, debate over development of knowing right from wrong

Toddler years About 1-3 years old Physical-Walk, run, climb, go up and down stairs. Dress themselves. Intellectual-Simple words/phrases, understand cause and effect, size and space of objects. Emotional-Become a little independent, self esteem grows with encouragement, strong emotions, and mood swings.

Toddler years Social-Parallel Play( Play near but not with each other) Toddlers want to do everything themselves, become easily frustrated and throw temper tantrums. Moral-Toddlers develop a sense of right and wrong but test the limits of caregivers

Pre-School Years About 3-5 years old Physical-Run, hop, pedal tricycle, throw and catch a ball. Print their names and cut paper. Intellectual- Count numbers, identify colors, recognize letters. Express more complex ideas through asking “how” and “why.” Like to play dress up and make believe.

Pre School Years Emotional- More expressive and less frustrated. Less self centered and more understanding of others. Range of emotions. May not be able to tell the difference between pretend and reality Social-Cooperative play (Play and interact with each other). Take turns, share, solve problems together. Around the age of 4-5 kids may choose a best friend. Moral- Strong sense of wrong and right. Get upset when someone doesn’t follow rules.

School-Age Years years old. Spending a lot of time in school Physical-Permanent teeth replace baby teeth. More skilled at jumping and throwing, better at writing and drawing Intellectual-Acquire reasoning skills. Use symbols such as numbers and letters which leads to reading and simple math. Emotional- More sensitive to stress from school and family. Those who have support are more likely to handle it better.

School Age Years Social-Form peer groups that help them practice social skills. Also practice sharing and considering feelings of others. Moral-Understand rules are flexible and change. Care about what other people think of them.

Social, Emotional, & Physical needs To satisfy a child’s social and emotional needs, caregivers need to remind the child he or she is loved. To satisfy a child’s physical needs, caregivers need to provide a warm and safe home, nutritious food, and appropriate clothing.
