Presentation transcript:

2012

 The Georgia Governor's Honors Program (GHP) four- week summer residential instructional designed to provide intellectually gifted and artistically talented high school students challenging and enriching educational opportunities not usually available during the regular school year. Activities are designed to provide each participant with opportunities to acquire the skills, knowledge and attitudes to become independent, life- long learners. The Georgia Governor's Honors Program is fully-funded by the Georgia General Assembly, and operates at no cost to the participant.

 Rising juniors and seniors in Georgia's public and private high schools, and students enrolled in home school may be nominated by their teachers.

 For the 2012 program there are four categories of nominations:  Academic: Biology, Chemistry, Communicative Arts, French, German, Latin, Spanish, Mathematics, and Social Studies.  Fine Arts: Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts, Theater Design (new this year)  Technology / Career Education: Architectural, Graphic, & Industrial Design, Executive Management, Engineering & Technology  Agricultural Education: Agriscience/Biotechnology, Agriscience/ Environmental Science

 Students Nominated:  Current 10 th or 11 th graders  Demonstrate high aptitude and high interest in the area of nomination  May be nominated for district interviews in only one subject area  Must have PSAT or SAT data (can take to state interview)  Must have positive teacher recommendations  Must complete the state nomination form (if attending county level interviews)  Must be willing to commit to full participation in the GHP program

 Science and Agricultural Education nominees are required to submit a research project abstract with their applications (for both the district and state interviews)  Technology/Career Education nominees must have taken or be currently enrolled in a technology/career education course.  Students nominated for the 2011 program but not participating in the program may be nominated for the 2012 program.  Students who participated in the 2011 GHP program are not eligible to participate in the program again in any area.

ACADEMIC  COMMUNICATIVE ARTS  The written portion of the interview process will now be based on the reading material provided at the interview.  SCIENCE  The selection process has been revamped:  The research abstract has been dropped.  Instead, students will have 20 minutes before their interview to examine a data set and a broadly defined research topic. There will be multiple data sets and topics for students to choose from in their nominated area.  In their interview, they will be asked to discuss their analysis of the data set, and to propose a research investigation within the constraints of the topic.

FINE ARTS  THEATRE/DESIGN is a new major. Please read the description and selection criteria (p. 18) carefully. CAREER/TECH ARCHITECTURAL, GRAPHIC, AND INDUSTRIAL DESIGN  To better reflect the actual content of the GHP Design component:  The name of the component has changed.  Suggested work samples have been expanded. EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT  Courses taken for eligibility have changed slightly: family/consumer sciences and health occupations have been dropped; economics has been added.  In addition, it is specified that the nominee have an interest both in the American market economy and in starting a business of their own.
