2 ADVANCED PLACEMENT CAPSTONE DIPLOMA

3 Basic Understanding of AP AP means Advanced Placement College level course using a college level text book Students can earn college credit for the course based on their score on the College Board’s AP exam College credit scores vary by the college $92 per exam fee is paid for by the great state of Arkansas AP exams are administered in May AP courses also count as “weighted” credit if the student takes the AP exam Students earn $100 for every AP exam score of 3+ Students can earn national recognition for their scores

4 ADVANCED PLACEMENT CAPSTONE DIPLOMA  Student must score a 3 or above on 6 AP course exams  2 of the AP courses required are AP Seminar and AP Research  AP Seminar is taken in 10 th grade  AP Research is taken in 11 th grade  Results arrive summer before 12 th grade

5 AP CAPSTONE CERTIFICATE  Available for students who score a 3 or higher on AP Seminar and AP Research

6 AP Courses at AHS AP Capstone: AP Seminar and AP Research (offered Fall 2017) Arts: AP Art History, AP Music Theory, AP Studio Art Drawing, AP Studio Art 2-D Design/Photography, and AP Studio Art 3-D/Sculpture English: AP English Language and Composition and AP English Literature and Composition History and Social Sciences: *AP European History with WE.org Service, *AP Human Geography with WE.org Service, AP Psychology, AP US Government and Politics, AP US History, and AP World History Mathematics and Computer Science: AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, *AP Computer Science A with WE.org Service, AP Statistics, and AP Computer Science Principles Sciences: AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics 1, and AP Physics 2 World languages: *Spanish Language and Culture with WE.org Service and Spanish Literature and Culture

7 AP at Arkansas High Number of AP exams that will be ordered this year: 632 21 AP Scholars in 2015 AP Scholars demonstrate superior college-level achievement through AP courses and exams. They receive an award certificate, and this achievement is acknowledged on any AP score report that is sent to colleges the following fall. 346 AHS students are participating in at least one AP course this year. 32% of AHS students are participating in an AP course this school year.

8 AP Seminar (10 th grade) Students learn how to:  Investigate real-world topics from multiple perspectives  Carefully analyze information, write evidence-based arguments and effectively communicate them  Work independently and with a team to research a topic, develop a written report and deliver a presentation Exam score based on: 1.Team Project & Presentation 25% 2. Individual Research- Based Essay & Presentation 35% 3.End-of-Course Exam 40%

9 AP Research (11 th grade) Students learn how to:  Design, plan, and conduct a year-long mentored, research-based investigation  Apply research methods and practices to address a real- world topic selected by the student  Write a college-level research paper  Present and orally defend research findings and methodology Exam score based on: 1.Academic Paper (4,000 - 5,000 words) 75% 2.Presentation and Oral Defense 25%

16 Health & PE (For students in Athletics, Cheer, or Redline) 9 th Grade Athletics, Cheer, or Redline Must have qualified by the cheer or redline tryout to enroll 9 th grade Athletics for girls or boys (full year) Tell the counselor in the room if you are in one of these categories (she will direct you to the correct course) Health/Safety + Elective Only do this if you are in Athletics, Cheer, or Redline Choose Health/Safety #480000, section (HS) Choose a semester elective such as GATE 9 #596109 or Intro to Tech Engineering #494010

17 Fine Arts Band/Music Students Choose Band 1 OR Orchestra 1 These courses are found in the (FA) section FA means Fine Arts Non Band/Music Students Choose **AP Art History OR Visual Art 1 OR Theatre 1 OR **AP Studio Art Drawing College Credit is possible for the AP Art History Visual Art 1 is a prerequisite for many other Art classes These courses are in the (FA) section FA means Fine Arts

19 Additional Course Options You may want to choose PAP Civics/Econ Block if you are not taking a Spanish course Civics requirement can be recovered in 11 th grade AP US Gov & Politics while taking another AP course I only recommend ONE AP course for freshman. This is the same recommendation from the College Board There are many other elective & career tech options. Feel free to explore. You will have many opportunities to choose electives during your junior & senior year.
