2 US oil demand is MBPD and 2/3 is used for transportation US spends $1B per day importing oil 5 billion gallons of fuel used in military operations in 2010 ($13.2B) 13.4 M gallons used by USFS ($35M) The DOD has over 200,000 non- tactical, fossil fuel burning vehicles in their fleet USFS has over 20,000 vehicles in their fleet Energy Challenge: Cost and National Security Present Situation Goal: Reduce US oil imports by 33% by 2025 Reduce Fed Govt energy use by 30% by 2015 Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA 2007) By 31 Dec 2015 all new Fed Govt vehicles need to use alternate fuel Presidential Memo of 24 May 2011 DOE/DOD Net Zero Programs 2% annual fuel demand decrease 20% decrease in fuel usage Mandates for Change

3 To reduce cost and Fossil Fuel Dependence “One Size Fits All” is no longer practical Fossil Fuel Fleet operating costs are usually 70-80% higher than electric vehicles A large number of non-Tactical vehicles in the Federal Fleet are of the light duty (LD) truck category or smaller Installation management Facility and utility maintenance Airfield maintenance and management personnel Most rarely travel more than 50 miles per day and rarely need to go over 25mph Facility campuses Flightlines Military installations The need for Electric Utility Vehicles

4 The US Forest Service has over 20,000 vehicles Includes 11,100 vehicles in the pickup/utility vehicle category The USFS is under a number of mandates including: 2% annual reduction in fuel demand 20% total reduction in fuel demand from 2005 to 2015 –USFS is not on track to meet this mandate Greenhouse gas reduction plan by agency for 2020 Use of PHEV when life cycle costs show equivalent values Electric powered utility vehicles can help the US Forest Service meet these mandates and more importantly reduce operating costs for a portion of the USFS pickup/utility vehicle fleet.
