Navigation 3 Airspace Classes A-G ATZ MATZ Danger,Prohibited,Restricted Areas Notams

Navigation 3 The world-famous RAF display team were on their final approach to the annual Yorkshire Air Show at Elvington, near York, when a series of airspace infringements made it too dangerous to fly. 2003 BBC News

Navigation 3 A microlight aircraft, a glider and a large flock of birds all strayed into the restricted airspace in addition to one other, as yet, unspecified infringement .

Navigation 3 Furious air show organiser Ken Cothliff said the Civil Aviation Authority had been informed and the pilots of the rogue aircraft could expect to be prosecuted.

Navigation 3 Classes A-E Controlled Airspace Classes F-G Uncontrolled Airspace Controlled Airspace is airspace that Air Traffic Control provide a separation.

Navigation 3 Class A Airspace IFR Only (regardless of weather conditions) ATC Clearance ATC Separation London Terminal Manoeuvring Area (LTMA)

Navigation 3 CTR, or Control Zone starts at ground level

Navigation 3 Terminal Manoeuvring Areas (TMA) London Terminal Manoeuvring Area (LTMA) CTR Control Zone around smaller airports

Navigation 3 Class B Airspace IFR or VFR ATC Clearance ATC Separation None in UK

Navigation 3 Class C Airspace FL195-FL660 IFR or VFR ATC Clearance Information only for VFR Before March 2006, was FL245-FL660

Navigation 3 Some Irish lower airspace is Class C

Navigation 3 Class D Airspace IFR or VFR CTR’s and CTA’s VFR information only Radio communication essential Bristol Class D

Navigation 3 Brize Norton Lyneham Bristol

Navigation 3 Class “D” ialogue---you must establish 2 way radio contact Altitude 622 ft CTA (Control Area) Not to surface CTR (centre or Zone) Radio 125.65 Class D Bath gap LOA

Navigation 3 Class E Airspace Part of some Scottish CTA’s IFR/VFR VFR not subject to clearance

Navigation 3 Class F Class F Airspace Advisory Routes Low Traffic

Navigation 3 Class G Airspace Everywhere else

Navigation 3 C Changed to FL195 March 2007 FL195

ATZ (Aerodrome traffic Zone) Navigation 3 ATZ (Aerodrome traffic Zone) Zones always go to the surface CTR is also a zone Surface to 2000ft AAL Centred on the mid point of longest runway Radius 2 or 2.5n.m Top Exam Tip All this is printed on your chart legend

Navigation 3 Rule of the Air 39 states that An aircraft shall not fly, take off or land within the ATZ of an aerodrome ..... unless the commander of the aircraft has obtained the permission of the ATC unit at the aerodrome ..... or flight information unit ..... or air/ground unit at that aerodrome to enable the flight to be conducted with safety.

MATZ (Military Aerodrome traffic Zone) Navigation 3 MATZ (Military Aerodrome traffic Zone) Need permission to go in ATZ Can go in MATZ, usually class G Airspace without permission The MATZ takes on the class of air space around it.

Navigation 3 Controlled or uncontrolled Airspace VFR or IFR Airspace Classes

Navigation 3 C D E F G

Navigation 3 Prohibited Areas Exactly what it says on the tin.---you must not fly in it. Prosecution may follow P106, Horizontal extent as shown, top 2500 feet amsl

Navigation 3 Danger areas Although not strictly prohibited, it is not recommended you fly in them when active. Danger Area 121, top 600 feet amsl. The symbol means an information service exists

Navigation 3 Danger areas The asterisk * means there are by-laws making it illegal to fly in this area when active.Prosecution may follow D011/10.0 OCNL/24.1 Danger area 011 goes up to 10,000ft amsl, occasionally 24,100ft. Its in the legend
