1 Unit-3 FLIGHT INFORMATION SYSTEMS
1

2 Syllabus Radar service, Basic radar terminology – Identification procedures using primary / secondary radar performance checks – use of radar in area and approach control services – assurance control and co-ordination between radar / non radar control – emergencies Flight information and advisory service – Alerting service – Co-ordination and emergency procedures – Rules of the air. 2

3 OBJECTIVE To Improve airspace utilization To Reduce flight delays;
To Facilitate direct routings and more optimum flight profiles To Enhance safety

4 ATC RADAR ATC RADAR =PSR + SSR, purpose wise
Airport Surveillance radar Air Route Surveillance Radar 4

5 SERVICE AREAS AERODROME CONTROL SERVICE AREA AREA CONTROL SERVICE AREA
APPROACH CONTROL SERVICE AREA 5

6 RADAR SERVICES Radar Control Service for D & E Airspace
Radar Advisory Service to F Airspace Radar Flight Information Service to G airspace

7 AERODROME CONTROL SERVICE
Service given to the aircraft from the control tower (–> TWR) with its extended field of vision, to start engines, to take off or to land, etc. ADCS directs taxiing aircraft and manages airborne traffic in the immediate vicinity of the airport.

8 AREA CONTROL SERVICE The Service for the safe flow of traffic along airways (–> En-route) and in certain portions of terminal control areas (–> APP). Area Control Service cover for various altitudes and geographic sectors

9 APPROACH CONTROL SERVICE
Approach control service for flights arriving and departing from an airport in a specific control zone (–> CTR) and in terminal control area (usually within a 50 km radius of the airport)

10 TYPES OF RADAR PRIMARY SURVEILLANCE RADAR-PSR SECONDARY SURVEILLANCE RADAR-SSR

11 ARTCC-Air Route Traffic Control Centre
Air Route Surveillance Centre=Air Route Traffic Control Centre. Objective: For providing air traffic control service on IFR flight plan in controlled airspace & on Enrouote For assistance service to VFR Flight 11

12 ARTCC AT SCHIPOL AIRPORT
12

13 Air Route Surveillance Radar-SSR
13

14 Air Route Surveillance Radar
ARSR radar used primarily to detect and display an aircraft’s position while en route between terminal areas ARSR enabling controllers to provide radar air traffic control service when aircraft are within the ARSR coverage ARSR also enabling an ARTCC to provide terminal radar services similar by a radar approach control 14
