Neighborhood Crime Watch

What is Neighborhood Watch? Group of neighbors who: 1.identify and report criminal activity to the police. 2.promote crime prevention programs within the neighborhood

What does a Neighborhood Watch group do ? Communicate with neighbors and police. Neighborhood Meetings provide forum to exchange vital public safety and crime prevention info. Sponsor programs in the neighborhood such as Operation ID, House Numbering, and Emergency Beacons.

Organizing a Crime Watch Group 1.Appoint Neighborhood Coordinator 2.Recruit Block Captains 3.Conduct Block Captain orientation 4.Canvass neighborhood for Resident Meeting 5.Conduct Resident orientation 6.Develop phone tree, organizational structure, & priorities. 7.Decide how often to meet and schedule regular meetings.

Why Crime Watch Works Police Officer availability Neighborhood Watchers Crime Prevention strategies to make crime difficult in neighborhood. Crime Watch happens 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Special attention to: vacationing neighbors, latch- key children, abandoned buildings, areas where adolescents gather.

Programs Distribute crime prevention information Hold meetings with police Conduct home security surveys Organize special watch or escort program for elderly or disabled (neighborhood reassurance) “Safe Houses” for children Vacation Watch program Post Neighborhood Watch signs Sponsor the Operation Identification program

Watch Techniques Develop understanding of normal activity Use your head Know your neighbors Observation lookouts – locations in your home Mobile observation (walking & automobile) Binoculars Notebook DO NOT BECOME INVOLVED. REPORT CRIME TO POLICE!

Suspicious Activities Person/vehicle remaining in stationary position for a long period of time Person behaving in a manner that may not be considered normal Vehicle frequently driving in an area with no apparent destination Individual concealing property of him/herself from public view Vehicles driving without headlights on during evening hours

Individuals leisurely walking around parked vehicles Damaged vehicle is being driven or a vehicle being driven recklessly Individuals running through area for no apparent reason Observing many traffic violations committed by a driver on the road Vehicle transporting objects during the night Individuals selling items from a vehicle

How To Report a Crime Call 911 (note: cell phones go to Mass. State Police) Specify type of emergency (police, fire, medical) Is the emergency; about to happen, happening, or just occurred Follow instructions from 911 operator. Stay on the line until you are told to hang up.
