3 University of California Office of the President Safety from Crime  UCOP Employees Have Been Crime Victims in 2008 –Assault, Purse Snatching, Pick-Pocketing, Car Break-Ins, and Carjacking  How Not To Become a Crime Victim - Recommendations From: –University of California Police Department; –Oakland Police Department; and –BART

4 University of California Office of the President Conceal What You Have To Steal  Conceal Valuables –Cash, Wallets, Jewelry, Electronics  Minimize Amount of Valuables You Carry Around –Minimize No. of Credit Cards in Wallet  Carry Items Separately –ID/Drivers License Away from Cash –Car Keys Separate from House Keys

5 University of California Office of the President Night Time Personal Safety  Travel with a Friend or in a Group  Be Alert & Aware of Your Surroundings  Avoid Dark, Vacant or Deserted Areas –Use Well-Lit, Well-Traveled Routes  Dress in Clothes & Shoes Which will Not Hamper Movement

6 University of California Office of the President If You Must Walk Alone in an Unsafe Area  Call Someone You Trust, Locally Located, on Your Cell Phone –Explain the Situation & Your Location –As You Walk, Be Cautious Of Your Surroundings as You Talk to the Person on the Cell Phone  Walk Confidently – Do Not Look Vulnerable –If Something Happens - the Person on the Cell Phone Would Immediately Call the Local Police

7 University of California Office of the President If You Sense Trouble  Move Away from the Threat If Possible  Join Any Group of People Nearby  Cross the Street & Increase Your Pace  If Threat is Imminent & People are Close by to Help - Get Their Attention - Yell, Scream, Make a Commotion  Go to an Open Business  Call 911 From a Safe Location

8 University of California Office of the President Vehicle Safety  Park in Well-Lit, Heavily Populated Areas –Trust Your Instincts - If It Doesn't Feel Right, Park Elsewhere  Avoid Parking Next to Occupied Cars  Be Aware of Your Surroundings  Note of Location of Emergency Phones in Case You Need to Use Them  Report Suspicious Persons to Security

9 University of California Office of the President Vehicle Safety (Continued)  Do Not Leave Items Visible in Car –Even Trash May Look Attractive to a Thief  Always Roll Up Windows & Lock the Doors Before Leaving the Vehicle  Return to Vehicle with Keys in Hand  Look Around & Under Vehicle Before Approaching  Check the Back Seat Before Entering  Upon Entering Vehicle, Lock All Doors

10 University of California Office of the President If Approached For Your Vehicle (Carjacking)  Highly Personal Decision – UC Police Strongly Recommends to Immediately Give Up the Keys Without Protest  Avoid Getting into Vehicle with Suspect(s). If You Surrender the Vehicle Note the Following: –Race, Sex, Height, & Clothing of Suspect(s) –Direction the Suspects Went –If They had Weapons, & If So, What Type
