Chapter Seventeen Methods of Delivery

Chapter Seventeen Table of Contents zQualities of Effective Delivery zMethods of Delivery*

Methods of Delivery zEffective delivery should combine the qualities of a performance with qualities of naturalness.*

Qualities of Effective Delivery zEffective delivery is the skillful application of natural conversational behavior in a way that is relaxed, enthusiastic, and direct.*

Qualities of Effective Delivery zEffective Delivery is: yNatural yEnthusiastic yConfident yDirect*

Qualities of Effective Delivery: Effective Delivery Is Natural zUnlike the elocutionists at the turn of the century, contemporary speechmakers emphasize naturalness and the content of the speech, rather than the theatrical elements of delivery.*

Qualities of Effective Delivery: Effective Delivery Is Enthusiastic zWhen you talk about something that excites you, you are naturally enthusiastic. yYou: xTalk more rapidly. xUse more gestures. xLook more at your listeners. xUse more pronounced facial expressions. xStand closer to listeners. xFocus audience’s attention on the message.*

Qualities of Effective Delivery: Effective Delivery is Confident zFocus on your ideas, not on memorized words or sentences. zConfident delivery directs audience’s attention to the message and away from the speaker’s behavior.*

Qualities of Effective Delivery: Effective Delivery Is Direct zConnect personally with the audience by building rapport: yMake the message relevant to the interests and attitudes of the audience. yDemonstrate interest in and concern for audience. *

Qualities of Effective Delivery: Effective Delivery Is Direct zWays to establish a direct connection with listeners: yMaintain eye contact yUse a friendly tone of voice yAnimate facial expressions yPosition yourself close to the audience*

Methods of Delivery zAs a speaker, you can choose from four basic methods of delivery: speaking from a manuscript, speaking from memory, speaking impromptu, or extemporaneous speaking. yEach method is distinguished by its own voice, body behaviors, and qualities of delivery.*

Methods of Delivery zSpeaking yFrom Manuscript yFrom Memory yImpromptu yExtemporaneously*

Methods of Delivery: Speaking from Manuscript zSpeaking from manuscript refers to reading the speech from prepared written text that contains the entire speech, word for word.*

Methods of Delivery: Speaking from Memory zSpeaking from memory is the formal name for oratory, the ancient public speaking technique of fully committing speeches to memory. yOratory is not a natural way to present a message.*

Methods of Delivery: Speaking Impromptu zSpeaking impromptu refers to delivering a speech without prior preparation.*

Methods of Delivery: Speaking Impromptu zIf speaking impromptu, consider these tactics: yAnticipate any situations and prepare for them. yConsider the needs of your listeners. yNotice what others around you are saying. yGive a brief statement summarizing others’ positions before giving your own.*

Methods of Delivery: Speaking Extemporaneously zSpeaking extemporaneously falls somewhere between impromptu and written or memorized deliveries: you prepare and practice in advance, but speak from an outline of key words or phrases instead of memorizing or writing the speech word for word.*

Methods of Delivery: Speaking Extemporaneously zTips on using an extemporaneous speaking outline: yConsider using notecards. yUse blank margins to help you find your place. yNumber your notes. ySlide notes underneath one another. yDon’t distract the audience by using the outline in hand gestures.*
