2 Interview Speech Introduction Answer the typical interview question: –“Tell me about yourself” Low risk opportunity to get feedback

3 Basic Requirements: Select a job position that you find (or invent a realistic one) Plan the presentation –Introduction –Body –Conclusion –Should focus on establishing how your skills fit the requirements Practice and deliver speech on assigned day

4 Topic Selection Find relevant information/job descriptions –Online –In the newspaper –Departmental internship guides? –If you are still stuck… ask me

5 Due This Wednesday, 11 th Hand in your job description at the beginning of class –Ensures that your position is appropriate –Gives you the time needed to prepare your introduction and basic outline by Friday –I will only give you feedback on this topic if I feel yours is not sufficient; by Wednesday night

6 Organization of Interview Speech Use the outline worksheet in your workbooks – page 7 –Bring this to class on Friday, filled in Attend to the grading criteria on the Instructor’s Evaluation Form during development For more detailed organization discussion, see your workbook

7 Time Limits 3-5 Minutes – how do we want to run this? 15 Second Buffer – 1 pt. Ever 15 second period over/under You can avoid these penalties with practice

8 Delivery/notes Present your speech EXTEMPORANEOUSLY –Do NOT read your speech –Do NOT recite from memory –Do NOT make it up on the spot You will be allowed note cards –5 pt. Penalty for doing any of the preceding “DO NOTs” This is at my discretion. You will not be allowed to complain or counter this decision

9 Delivery/Notes (cont’d) Dress Appropriately for the position that you are interviewing Eye contact is a must No Slang No vocalized pauses See grading sheet for specifics

10 Remaining Issues No outside resources are needed No formal outline is required –HOWEVER I am requiring that you hand in the workbook outline sheet on the day you present Visual aids are not required

11 What is due on your speech day? I am requiring that each of you present me with a pocket folder, with your name on it This will be given to me before your speech It will contain: –A typed copy of your job description –The Interview Speech Instructor’s evaluation form, found in your workbook –A copy of your presentation notes (copies of your actual note cards, to be used in the presentation) –Your completed workbook outline form

12 When will you get this back – with a grade? Roughly one week after the final speech day (there are two for this first speech) the folder will be returned to you with feedback, grades, and all of the work that you handed in This speech is worth 25 points
