a group of words that has a subject and a predicate (verb). A clause is: a group of words that has a subject and a predicate (verb). There are several types of clauses, but the only type of clause that can stand alone as a sentence is an independent clause because it expresses a complete thought.

A simple sentence: a sentence with only one independent clause and NO dependent clauses. can be very long and include many words and phrases is also known as an independent clause

Compound sentence Examples: The dog barked, and the cat ran. The dog barked; the cat ran. She wanted to go to the mall, but he wanted to go to the park. She wanted to go to the mall; he wanted to go to the park.

2 ways to make a compound sentence: To avoid a run-on, you must punctuate a compound sentence one of two ways: 1st – combine 2 independent clauses with a semicolon 2nd – combine 2 independent clauses with a comma and coordinating conjunction: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

Making a compound sentence: Semicolon – I love English class; it is the best! You have 2 complete thoughts here: I love English class. It is the best. We can combine these two simple sentences by using a semicolon.

Making a compound sentence: A comma and a coordinating conjunction – I learn so much in English class, and I love it! You have 2 complete thoughts here: I learn so much in English class. I love it. We can combine these two simple sentences with a comma and a coordinating conjunction.
