Aim: How do you begin a good speech? Get attention and interest of your audience Reveal the topic of your speech Establish your credibility and goodwill Preview the body of the speech

Aim: How do you begin a good speech? Reveal the Topic State clearly the topic If not, listeners will be confused. And once they are confused, your chances of absorbing them into your speech are almost nil. This is a very basic point, but often forgotten!

Aim: How do you begin a good speech? Establish Credibility and Goodwill Credibility—the audience’s perception of whether a speaker is qualified to speak on a given topic Goodwill—the audience’s perception of whether the speaker has the best interests of the audience in mind

Aim: How do you begin a good speech? Preview the Body of the Speech Preview Statement-A statement in the introduction that identifies the main points to be discussed in the body of the speech Prepares the listener for what’s ahead Provide a smooth lead-in to the body

Aim: How do you begin a good speech? Keep it brief (no more than 10-20% of speech) Be on the lookout for possible introductory materials as you develop your main points. Be creative in devising your introduction. Don’t worry about the exact wording until you have prepared the body of your speech. Work out your introduction in detail.
