What happened to New Amsterdam in the 1650s? It was taken over by the English during a war with the Dutch

How did New York gets its name? King Charles II gave New Amsterdam to his brother, James, the Duke of York, and it was renamed New York. By the way, James later became King James II of England.

How did New Jersey get started? James, the Duke of York, divided New York and created New Jersey
