-- Excellent place for trading with Native Americans --New Amsterdam: trading post brings economic opportunity (eventually becomes NYC) -- English and Dutch rivals: English gains possession of the colony Allowed to buy land and religious freedom for– Catholics, French Protestants, and Jews

-- believed all people should be treated with respect; including Native Americans --- Not all encounters with Native Americans and colonists were peaceful

Penn’s document attracts colonists from all over Europe; including Sweden (founders of Delaware) Considered part of the Lower Counties of PA Penn allowed them to elect their own assembly and obtain their own charter
