Library Web Site Introduction For Library Student Assistants To be used in conjunction with the Levi Watkins Learning Center Web Site This presentation will explain to you the many resources available via the Library’s web site. This tutorial will begin with identifying the major access points and information about the various departments and services offered through the Library.

Library’s Homepage The first slide is an image of the homepage of the Levi Watkins Learning Resources Center. To the left are links to general and departmental information about the library. To the right are links that serve as access points to actual resources (books, journals, guides, etc.).

General Information About the Library –A message from the director of the Library, Dr. Janice Franklin –A brief history of the Levi Watkins Learning Center –Directions to the Library Hours –Provides the current semester hours of each department, as well as any “Special Hours” of operation. (i.e. holidays, convocations, etc.) Library Departments & Staff –Lists Library departments and its specific contact person. –Also includes an alphabetical listing of all Library staff their title and contact information. The Libretto –Provides access to archived issues of the Library’s newsletter

General Information Other Libraries –Provides links to other libraries in the state of Alabama –Provides links to other libraries that are part of the HBCU Library Alliance Student Services –Provides access to Hornet’s Web, Blackboard, FAFSA, and other sites of interest to ASU students

Departmental Information Information Literacy- links to services, instruction calendar, staff, course research guides, resources, and student assistant training. –The Information Literacy Program is designed to help students, faculty, and staff develop new and enhance existing information literacy skills that will enable them to locate, evaluate, and use information effectively and ethically. –Link provides access to course research guides, which acquaint users with resources in the Library and online that are useful in doing research on various topics. –The Instruction Calendar allows individuals to view the date, time, and location of an Information Literacy session. Center for Civil Rights –Links to the National Center for the Study of Civil Rights & African-American Culture at Alabama State University –Location, directions, hours, and other information about the National Center are accessible here.

Departmental Information Media Center –The Library Media Center provides services designed to meet the teaching and learning goals of the University. This includes the Library’s collection of AV equipment, and requests for delivery and borrowing of AV equipment. Ask a Librarian –Allows non ASU and ASU affiliates (i.e. students, faculty, staff, and alumni) to have questions answered electronically by a professional librarian. –Responses are sent within 48 hours from receipt of the question

Library Catalog Accesses the library’s print/hard copy collection (i.e. books, journals, multi-media).Library Catalog Montgomery Area Libraries Catalog Accesses the catalogs of other area colleges and universities (AUM, Huntingdon College, Troy University, and Faulkner University).Montgomery Area Libraries Catalog E-Journal Finder Accesses full-text e-journals by title, ISSN, or subject.E-Journal Finder Reserves Accesses items placed on reserve (both print and electronic: e- reserve) for various classes, as well as its policies and procedures.Reserves Library Services Accesses information concerning services the library offers (i.e. inter-library loan, virtual reference, and copy services) and who may use them.Library Services

Access Points Databases Accesses online databases which are used to find abstracts, full-text journal articles, resource aids, and reference materials. Titles are arranged both alphabetically and by subject.
