Site History The Glanbrook Landfill Site has been in operation since The Site is used for the landfilling of MSW generated in geographic Hamilton. At current fill rates the site is slated to close in The Site also has a windrow compost facility.

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Site Location The Site is located in a rural setting surrounded by mainly farms and residential lots. The Site has an active liaison group as a stipulation of the ECA. Called the Glanbrook Landfill Coordinating Committee (GLCC) who meets quarterly

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Public Complaints In the Mid 2000’s up to 2007 the Site received numerous litter and odour complaints. The MOE issued an order to deal with litter issues. A number of measures were put into place including new litter fences better daily and intermediate cover materials added to the Site.

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Public Complaints In 2007 the City installed a gas collection system at the site with a Landfill Gas to Energy Facility. The plant became fully operational in January of The plant currently has a 98% up time efficiency.

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Public Complaints In 2007 prior to the gas plant becoming operational the City of Hamilton issued air purifiers specifically designed to filter Hydrogen Sulphide (H 2 S) to residents who lived within the immediate vicinity of the Site.

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Noise Measures In 2010 the City upgraded noise mitigation measures at the gas plant as a result of complaints. The City added dual hospital grade silencers, radiator shrouds, change fans to a lower pitch blade assembly and planted more trees between the plant and residents. The plant runs under night time MOE levels for noise 24 hours a day.

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Public Liaison In the summer of 2007 a Landfill Open House was held where all neighbours were invited to come to the site for tours and a BBQ. Staff members were present to answer questions and show off the changes to the site. We now arrange a Site open house every other year.

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Staffing The Site now has a full time City of Hamilton Staff member. This staff member was added in The staff member has duties that include meeting face to face with all neighbours and overseeing the contractors daily operations to ensure all litter, dust, noise and odour mitigation measures are followed.

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Wildlife Habitat Council In 2010 the City of Hamilton in partnership with Waste Management of Canada to have the site certified with the Wildlife Habitat Council as a “Wildlife at Work” site. In 2012 the Site won the “Wings over Wetlands” award for North America as part of the Site’s continued commitment to naturalization

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Wildlife Habitat 2 pollinator gardens were added in 2012 in conjunction with the Glanbrook Conservation Authority. Blue Bird houses, Purple Martin Houses, Mallard Tubes, Turtle rafts and other wildlife habitat is added annually. The City plants trees annually to the buffer area for the future stage 3 of the Site.

MWA Spring Workshop May 2013 Results In 2007 the City received over 100 complaints for litter and odour. In 2012 the City received 1 confirmed landfill related complaint with a goal of zero complaints in 2013.
