Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Who determines what we teach at KS4? The Government prescribes much of what the curriculum contains at Key Stage 4: English Mathematics Science Religious Education Physical Education Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development (SMSC) Information, Advice and Guidance opportunities. (IAG) All students must also have the opportunity of continuing to study a modern foreign language.

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College About RE and PE In addition to the Government the governors of a school are expected to have an input as to the nature of the school’s curriculum. Our school is a Catholic school and a Sports College. Both dimensions are not only at the heart of the ethos of our community but are also at the heart of our curriculum. All students follow a GCSE course in Religious Education. All students will follow a Physical Education course for 2 periods / week which will develop the individual’s use of sport as a vehicle to enhance their personal, physical and mental wellbeing.

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College What is the English Baccalaureate? “The English Baccalaureate was introduced as a performance measure in the 2010 performance tables. It is not a qualification in itself. The measure recognises where pupils have secured a C grade or better across a core of academic subjects – English, mathematics, history or geography, the sciences and a language.” DfE October 2012

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Why have you chosen the subjects you have for the English Baccalaureate? “The subjects we include are designed to ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to study a broad core of subjects, ensuring that doors are not closed off to them in terms of future progression. For example, for pupils hoping to go to university, The Russell Group guide on making informed choices for post-16 education identifies ‘facilitating subjects’ at A level. These are the subjects most likely to be required or preferred for entry to degree courses and ones that will keep the most options open. The subjects they identify are those included in the English Baccalaureate – mathematics, English, physics, biology, chemistry, geography, history and languages (classical and modern).” DfE October 2012

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Key Stage 4 Qualifications: GCSE BTEC National First Certificate All GCSEs are now linear – this means that the examinations are taken at the end of the course. For most subjects this will be at the end of Year 11. Core Science is sat at the end of Year 10. Some students may sit their RE and Maths at the end of Year 10. All our Key Stage 4 qualifications are worth the equivalent of one GCSE.

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Personalised Learning. We want to provide a curriculum that is suitable for each individual student. This MAY involve: Being entered early for a GCSE in Year 10. Being entered for an additional qualification. (Further Maths, AS Religious Studies) Being entered for a course that is assessed through a portfolio of work as well as a formal examination.

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Continuity and Progression. Thornleigh Salesian College hosts the Catholic Post-16 provision for all of Bolton. We offer courses that provide progression routes from Key Stage 4 to Post-16 education for all our students. Raising Participation Age – RPA All students who are currently in Year 9 must remain in full-time education or training until the age of 18. For the majority of students this will be at Thornleigh 6 th Form College although some will enter into apprenticeships or access training elsewhere. It’s never too early to start thinking about matching courses to careers and further study.
