Key Stage 4 and Beyond 2016 Thursday 28 th January

The Future University Truro College Apprenticeships Jobs and careers What do students need? 8 good passes and a broad range of choices

The New Specification GCSE Grades The current indication is that students sitting their English and Mathematics GCSE in 2017 4 = C. However in 2018 a good pass will be a 5 or better. Students will be expected to achieve a 6 or better to follow an A level qualification.

Progress and Attainment 8 Although colleges have not set targets for the entry to their courses they could do in the future to replace the 5 Good GCSE passes.

It is not a qualification in itself and at present there are no plans for a certificate to be issued to a student who successfully completes the English Baccalaureate. However it does recognise students’ achievement in the published league tables across a core of selected academic subjects in getting grade 5 passes in 5 GCSE subjects: English Mathematics 2 Sciences History or Geography German or French or Spanish The ‘English Baccalaureate’

Overview of Process KS4 & Beyond Information Evening for students and parents on Thursday 28 th January A taster course for vocational courses at Truro College takes place on Thursday 24 th February There is a Parents’ Consultation Evening on Thursday 3 rd March The Choices Form, upon which you will make your choices, will be issued on Monday 1 st February. Please return it to your tutor by Friday 8 th February. A letter confirming your KS4 courses will be sent home to parents following scrutiny of the courses chosen and checking their viability.

Choose option subjects because the pupil thinks they’ll be good at them, and they will be interested in them. If they’re not sure what they might want to take at university, ensure they’ve got a good mix of GCSE subjects – they could follow the English Baccalaureate model (taking English, maths, double science, history or geography and a modern language) Don’t choose subjects because they want to be with a best friend or a particular teacher - their friendship may not last and the teacher may be working with a different group! If they’re already thinking about a particular type of course, take a look at the entry requirements for specific courses at university and work back from there. Choice
