4 The English Baccalaureate
The EBacc is a performance measure introduced into school league tables in It is now one of the key measures by which a school is measured. It is not a qualification in itself. The measure shows where students have achieved a Grade 5 or better across a core of academic subjects – English, Mathematics, two Sciences, History or Geography and a Modern Foreign Language.

5 Progress 8 Progress 8 is a performance measure introduced into school league tables in The measure shows how much progress students have made in a range of subjects including the EBacc subjects and up to 3 others. This is also not a qualification in itself; but in the future it may become a simple way for employers and education providers to judge candidates.

However, ‘selecting’ universities such as those in the Russell Group and 1994 Group are highly competitive, demand high grades and have preferred subjects. The Russell Group has produced a document, Informed Choices, giving advice about choosing A Level subjects for entry to one of its institutions. A synopsis of ‘facilitating’ subjects is below:- English Maths Physics Biology Chemistry Geography History Languages
