Three Parts of Good Health Your total health involves all the parts of your life. health A combination of physical, mental/emotional, and social well-being

Three Parts of Good Health You need all three sides to complete the health triangle. Each side supports the other two sides to make up your total health.

Physical health involves the condition of your body. Physical Health Tips Eat a well-balanced diet. Do plenty of physical activity. Get plenty of sleep. See your doctor and dentist regularly. Physical activity includes participating in a sport or individual fitness activity. Most teens need about nine hours of sleep each night. Tobacco products harm your mouth, heart, and lungs. Using alcohol and other drugs can damage your liver, brain, and other organs. Always wear a safety belt in vehicles. Wear protective gear when involved in physical activities. Follow the safety rules at school. Do not use tobacco products, alcohol, or other drugs.

Mental/Emotional Health Mental health refers to your ability to solve problems and handle the daily events in your life. Emotional health involves feelings, such as happiness, sadness, and anger. Taking actions is an important part of mental/emotional health. Mental health When you have good mental health: You are able to see new ways of doing things. You can handle the changes that come your way. Emotional health Good emotional health means knowing and sharing your feelings and responding to them in positive ways. Mental/emotional health When you have good mental/emotional health: You face challenges in a positive yet realistic way. Your are patient with yourself. You know that everybody makes mistakes—including you! You take action to reach your goals. You take responsibility for your actions.

Social Health Social health describes how you relate to people at home, at school, and everywhere else. Social Health Tips Be friendly. Be open-minded. Be supportive. Be encouraging. Strong friendships and warm family relationships are signs of good social health. Help friends and family reach goals. Show friends and family you care. Be truthful and reliable. Listen carefully. Follow through on promises. Don’t argue when you disagree.

Your Overall Wellness You can maintain overall wellness by practicing good health habits and making smart choices for your mind and body. wellness A state of well-being or balanced health over a longer period of time Even though your physical, mental/emotional, and social health may change daily, your overall wellness takes the longer view. It is the balance between the three sides of your health triangle over weeks and months. The smart choices that you make everyday contribute to your wellness over your lifetime.

The Mind-Body Connection The mind-body connection shows how important it is to keep the three sides of the health triangle in balance. Your mind and body connect through your nervous system. This system includes thousands of miles of nerves. The nerves link your brain to every part of your body. Upsetting thoughts and feelings can affect the signals that go our from your brain to other parts of your body. mind-body connection How your emotions affect your physical and overall health and how your overall health affects your emotions

The Mind-Body Connection Emotions Your emotional health affects your physical and overall health. Your physical and overall health affects your emotional health. If you become very sad or angry, or if you have other strong emotions, talk to someone. Sometimes you may be in a situation that requires the professional health services of a counselor or medical provider. Physical and Overall Health

Physical Health I eat a well-balanced diet, including eating a healthy breakfast, every day. I sleep at least nine hours each night I am physically active for at least 60 minutes each day I bathe and wash my hair regularly I brush my teeth at least twice a day I avoid using tobacco, alcohol and other drugs I wear a safety belt when riding in a vehicle I visit the dentist and doctor for regular check-ups I wear protective gear when I bike, skate or ride a skateboard

Mental and Emotional I understand my strengths and weaknesses I express my feelings clearly and calmly I am patient with myself I accept helpful feedback and suggestions I find activities that I enjoy I am open to learning new skills and information I take responsibility for my actions I manage my feelings in healthy ways

Social Health I show that I respect and care for others I can disagree without arguing I am a good listener I am open and friendly toward others I am loyal, dependable and truthful I avoid talking behind people’s backs I support my friends and family members I am close friends with at least one other person
