Transition from Reception to Year 1 Year 1 is a transition year between the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum and the National Curriculum. Learning through play is still and important part of the Year 1 curriculum along with the introduction of more formal learning. As the year progresses the level of challenge in the play increases. We do this by setting children weekly challenges that are linked to part of our learning. This type of learning plays a key part in helping children become more independent in their learning.

Expectations and behaviour Children are expected to be more independent in Year 1, compared to Reception. Children should be able to come into the classroom and organise themselves in Year 1, saying goodbye to their family at the door. They should then put their belongings in the appropriate place and get ready to start the day. This includes Book Bags in the correct boxes, water bottles and fruit in the trays. Coats and bags should be hung on the pegs. They will then have a Morning Job to do – e.g. weekly challenges, reading on the carpet, handwriting practice, spellings, number formation etc, before the register is taken.

A typical day in year 1 Doors open at 8:35 Children should be completing their morning activity by 8:45 Register is taken at 8:50 and is closed by 9:00 9:00 – 9:20 Phonics 9:20 – 10:20 English followed by explore time 10:20 – 10:40 – Fruit and milk with a story BREAK 11:00 – 11:55 Maths LUNCH 1:10 – 1:40 Reading activities Afternoon: Topic work and Explore time 2:45 – 3:00 Assembly 3:15 HOME TIME Consistency across the year group means that as a team we work closely together.

Year 1 National Curriculum Following this meeting you will receive the Year 1 Age Related Standards set by The Government. These are to be achieved by the end of the year. Some children may still be developing these skills and some will exceed and move on to the Year 2 expectations by the end of the year. Children will be given the 100 most frequent words to learn by the end of the year. (These are in your hand-out). They will then move on to the top 200. (If you need the 200 please ask your class teacher)

Reading In Year 1, the children take home two books from the colour band below the one they are reading in school. This is because the books they take home should be able to be read independently by the child. The more challenging level of books are read in school, either with the teacher or a learning support assistant. When the child has been reading in school, usually once a week, a comment will be written in the reading diary. We would appreciate it if you would write in the reading diary when they read at home too. We recommend reading as much as you can with your child, as regular reading helps them make greater progress. The children will change their books twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. They will put the two books back and get two different ones. When your child moves up a colour band, we will put a label of that colour in their reading diary. Library books – The children have the opportunity to visit the school library once a week. They choose 1 book to take home to share with someone at home. The children will choose the book independently. This needs to be bought back on a Monday.

Holiday books and WOW vouchers THANK YOU! From all the amazing support we have decided to do WOW vouchers. If your child does something that makes you say WOW, we would like you to write a voucher. The WOW voucher will then be stuck into their holiday book – which will transform into their WOW books.

Homework Reading – We encourage children to read daily at home. This can be your child reading to you, sharing books together and you reading to your child. Spellings – Spellings will be based on the phonics they are learning. Maths – A short maths activity related to your child’s learning in class. Children will also be given a STEP activity – the children will be given 4 options to choose from and they have to pick one to work on with a family member over the term. Children can choose to do more if they want to. Homework will be given out on a Friday and bought in the following Wednesday.

Phonics Phonics is taught everyday. The children are set into phonics groups. At the end of the year the children will partake in a phonics screening check. To assess their understanding in phonics. Mrs Bamber will be running workshops on phonics during the year to support this.

Any questions?
