 K-4 A Summary  Harcourt Text Series K-5  Focusing younger grades on the use of math manipulatives and hands on-learning  Heterogeneous Grouping  Math Compacting & REACH  TERC Investigations

 Math Grouping Begins – High and Heterogeneous Classes – fixed percentage of students in classes  Placement Process to be completed by the end of September of the 5 th grade year  Criteria: grade 4 end of year test (top 60% of class) grade 4 math grades (all A’s on Report Card) NJASK4 Score (top 50% or top 30%) Waivers will not be permitted at the 5 th Grade Level

 Textbook – Harcourt 5 Text/Glencoe Course 1 (Pacing and Sequence to be determined by 5 th grade math teachers)  Compacting – Groups determined at the beginning of each chapter to ensure all students are challenged. Glencoe Course 2 text may be used as one material for compacting.  Consistency in Content (high classes differentiate in depth)

 Transition Math Class :  5 th to 6 th grade math students  Taught by WMS teacher  Design to help prepare all students transitioning from 5 th to 6 th grade math  Limited class size

 Middle School Math Program  Grade 6  Grade 7  Grade 8  Sequence of Math Courses at WHRHS

 Grade 6 – high – Glencoe Course 3 (with algebraic concepts) hetero – Glencoe Course 2  Grade 7 – high – Glencoe Pre-Algebra hetero – Glencoe Course 3 (with algebraic concepts)  Grade 8 – Algebra J –Structure & Method - Algebra K – Structure & Method - Pre-Algebra - Glencoe Pre-Algebra

 To enter Grade 6:  Placement Test – 80% + high range  Below 80% - hetero range  Teacher Recommendation based on: First 3 marking period grades Teacher Observation a. All waiver requests are granted (after one marking period if required grade average is not maintained, student will be moved to appropriate class level).

 Small cohort of students – 6-8 on average  Identified during the sixth grade  Test into this cohort  Skip seventh grade pre-algebra and take 8 th grade algebra J class as 7 th graders  8 th graders take Geometry Honors at WHRHS  No waivers are permitted into this program

 To enter Grade 7:  Placement test 90> for Pre-Algebra  Teacher Recommendation based on: First 3 marking period grades Teacher Observation a. All waiver requests are granted (after one marking period if required grade average is not maintained, student will be moved to appropriate class level).

 To enter Grade 8:  Test/quiz Grades from the first 3 MP periods –Pre-algebra 85>= J level, other wise K level out of pre-algebra  If in Course 3 Hetero Class 93> = J, = K lower than 83 = pre-algebra in grade 8  Algebra Pre-Readiness Identification Test – 80%> J level, 70%> K level and 69%< Pre-Algebra  All 7 th grade Pre-Algebra students are guaranteed entrance into Algebra K minimally.  Waiver requests will be granted, except students may not waive from Hetero 7 to Algebra J (after one marking period if required grade average is not maintained, student will be moved to appropriate class level – 70 GPA in K and 83 in J).
