Current 5 th Graders How students are placed into math for middle school is based on a student’s NWEA score. A student with an overall RIT score of 230 in all subcategories will be recommended to “skip” over 6 th grade math Students will receive a letter in June if they qualify to move into 7 th grade math to start middle school

Curriculum for Current 6 th Grade Students Taking Accelerated 7 th Grade Math CMP (Connected Mathematics Project) 7 th Grade Curriculum Integers & Rational Numbers Similarity Ratio, Proportion, and Percent Algebra - Linear Relationships Probability Statistics (TAG students only)

Curriculum for Current 6 th Grade Students Not Taking 7 th Grade Math CMP (Connected Mathematics Project) 6 th Grade Curriculum Rational Numbers (Fractions, Decimals and Percents Geometry Ratios Pre-algebra (expressions, one-step equations)

Future Math Placement for Current 6 th Grade Students in 7 th Grade Math Students take a series of assessments to determine placement for next year Rubric scores are used to help determine readiness for algebra

High School Diagnostic Test (January) Algebra Readiness Test (March) Cumulative CMP Exam (May) Assessments Used To Determine Readiness

Paths for Current 6 th Grade Students Taking 7 th Grade Math Path 1 (if rubric scores show readiness) 7 th Grade – Advanced Algebra 1 8 th Grade – Honors Geometry 9 th Grade – Honors Algebra 2 w/Trig

Paths for Current 6 th Grade Students Taking 7 th Grade Math Path 2 (if rubric scores do not show readiness) 7 th Grade – 8 th Grade CMP 8 th Grade – Advanced Algebra 1 9 th Grade – Geometry (or Honors) 10 th Grade – Algebra 2 w/Trig (or Honors)

Students who pass the rubric in 6 th grade will receive a letter by the end of the school year indicating their recommended placement for the following year Assessments Used To Determine Readiness

As a family, you may choose not to pursue this advanced math path, in which case your student will be placed into 8 th grade CMP

If your student qualifies for Advanced Algebra 1 or Honors Geometry at the middle school level… Both are rigorous, fast paced, high school courses with daily homework Things to Consider

Both require the completion of the high schools’ midterm and final exams for both semesters Things to Consider

Students are expected to maintain an A or B average in order to advance to the next level the following year Things to Consider

Students should not expect extra time to complete assessments outside of the class hour Things to Consider

Students should not expect retakes and/or rewrites for assessments at this level

Things to Consider Based on previous years, the rubric correctly identifies the mathematical background needed to succeed in the advanced classes, however, commitment and maturity level need to be considered as a family

Things to Consider If a student tests out of 6 th grade math and 8 th grade math, they are missing all of the Common Core areas in geometry that are still tested on state assessments Strongly recommend reviewing these concepts at home and/or over the summer
