Correia to PLHS Incoming 9 th graders!!!

Beware!!!! The classes that you pick now, will be the classes you are placed in. ---this is pending based on grades, approval if needed, and need There will be NO schedule changes made during the year so choose carefully! If you do not pick classes or turn in the card, your classes will be picked for you and will not be changed.

Articulation Card Each student should have come home with an orange or white articulation card. It is your responsibility to talk to your parents, fill out the card with this PowerPoint's help, get any signatures needed (AP Human Geography only) and turned back in to your Period 1 teacher by Tuesday February 11 th ! This card is a contract between you, your parents, counselors, and teachers PLHS counselors will be here February 12th and 13 th to meet with your child individually and go over the cards to make sure gross errors weren’t made. So don’t worry

How to fill out the card Fill out all personal information at the top including your address (not parents ) Read the contract statement and sign right below it: I have selected my classes for the school year. I understand that no changes will be made to my schedule after August I agree to take these classes for the entire school year. I understand no schedule changes will be made once the school year begins. Have parents sign it as well. Read the rest of this PowerPoint subject by subject to pick courses. LETS BEGIN!!!!

What your year should look like Every student at PLHS is required to take the following courses: English Math Science P.E World Language 1 Elective ---History is NOT a freshman requirement….

The “a-g” course pattern The “a-g” are college entrance requirements “a”- History/Social Science (2 years) “b”- English (4 years) “c”- Mathematics (3 years) “d”- Laboratory science (2 years) “e” Language other than English (2 years) “f”- Visual and performing arts (1 year) “g”- College-preparatory elective (1 year)

English Look at your card You have 2 choices when it comes to English If you took: English 8 Cluster You take English 1-2 Adv. at PL English 8 Seminar You take English 1-2 Seminar *** What’s 1-2 mean? It means English Semester1 and English Semester 2. There are 2 semesters in a year.

Mathematics Math is TRICKY! As they almost all have new names! If you took:You take at PL*: Algebra Readiness-----Integrated Math 1 Algebra Integrated Math 1 (Students with final grade of A or B will be assessed with Integrated 2 Placement Test. Depending on results of placement test with teacher recommendation student pathway will be Integrate 2 for 9 th grade.) Adv. Geometry------Intermediate Algebra or Advanced Intermediate Algebra (Adv. you must have a final grade of A or B in Adv. Geometry) ****this placement could change depending on other factors such as placement testing which will take place. Choose what is appropriate based on this chart

Science-Lab For Science these are recommendation based on years of data/trends in student success. If you took:We recommend at PL: Science If you are going to get an A or B in Science this year we recommend Physics 1-2 OR Adv. Physics 1-2 or Green Technology (see PLHS course catalog on PLHS website under Student tab for information) however if you are currently in Algebra Readiness we recommend Earth Science 1-2. **Environmental Science—this is an elective—follow Science 8 recommendations.

Social Studies Social Studies is NOT a requirement for 9 th graders. They will meet their full requirements in following years. However, one course is offered. AP Human Geography. ****AP stands for Advanced Placement (a COLLEGE course) it has the same standards, rigor, responsibilities, work load and book as our SD Colleges. It is not to be taken lightly at all!!!!!!!!! Your child will have LOTS of opportunities to take AP courses their Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year. This course if you choose it counts as your elective. You MUST get your Correia History teacher to sign off next to this choice in order to receive this course and the grade should be listed as well. If you don’t have an A in History or English we DO NOT recommend exploring this as your child’s elective. Once you are in this course you can not change your mind, the choice you make is for the entire school year.

Physical Education There are many P.E options as you can see. Please read up on these courses in the PLHS Course Catalog under the Students Tab on the PLHS website. A few notes: If you choose ATHLETICS you must specify all sports you are thinking of participating in. If you are interested in Navy Junior ROTC (NJROTC) you would sign up for NJROTC 1-2. If you were in Orchestra, Guitar, Jazz Band these are electives and do not count as PE. Choose another option under PE.

World Language-- Mandarin World Language placement is based on grade, placement testing, and other criteria. Please chose a language you are interested in and one your feel will help you in your future endeavors. You MUST take the same language all through high school. Skipping around (Spanish— then French—then Mandarin does NOT meet college requirements). Please choose carefully as it is a multiple year commitment! If you took: MANDARIN: Mandarin 1-2 and will get a C or higher------You take Mandarin 3-4 Mandarin 1-2 and will get a D or F---You must RETAKE Mandarin 1-2 again at PLHS Mandarin 3-4 and will get a C or higher----You take Mandarin 5-6 Mandarin 3-4 and will get a D or F—You must RETAKE Mandarin 3-4

Word Language-Spanish SPANISH: Spanish 1-2 and will get a C or higher------You take Spanish 3- 4 Spanish 1-2 and will get a D or F---You must RETAKE Spanish 1-2 again at PLHS Spanish 3-4 and will get a C or higher----You take Spanish 5-6 Spanish 3-4 and will get a D or F—You must RETAKE Spanish 3-4 again at PLHS ***If you are FLUENT in Spanish and are currently in Spanish 1-2 with a B or higher we recommend Spanish Speakers 3-4. If you are in Spanish 3-4 with a B or higher we recommend Spanish Speakers 5-6.

World Language--French If you want to take French 1-2 you need to register for French 1-2. BEWARE: you will need to take French 3-4 the following year for it to count for high school World Language graduation requirement. If you took Spanish last year or Mandarin we recommend you stay with that as you need many years of the same language to meet the requirement. If you want to switch languages beware you will need to take the new language for 2 years.

Electives Please read the course catalog for these courses. Many have requirements to get in so read carefully (such as music courses). Pick three possible options for your 9 th grade year. Please rate them 1-3 with 1 being your first choice etc. Remember that you may not get your first choice so if you don’t mark a second or third choice we will choose for you!!!!!

Final Thoughts Again we want to stress: You are signing this and it is a contract: I have selected my classes for the school year. I understand that no changes will be made to my schedule after August I agree to take these classes for the entire school year. I understand no schedule changes will be made once the school year begins. PLHS Counselors will make corrections if needed please do not worry!!!!!! Thank you!!!!!
