Volunteers PEOPLE & PLACES Club Development Volunteers CoachesOfficialsFacilities Rugby Values

Volunteers OUR CORE VALUES Respect Teamwork Discipline Sportsmanship Enjoyment

Volunteers ACTIVITY 1: VALUES Introduce yourself to your group mates –Name –Club –Role –How long you have been a rugby volunteer As a group, discuss the rugby union value on your table and how it can help volunteering including recruitment. 5 min

Volunteers ACTIVITY 1: FEEDBACK You have 2 minutes to tell us how the values could help recruit volunteers. 2 min

Volunteers ACTIVITY 2: RECRUITMENT OPTIONS Choose one of the items from the ‘menu’ your group has been given, What ingredients would you need to use it to successfully recruit volunteers? 8 min

Volunteers ACTIVITY 2: FEEDBACK What are your top three ingredients to run a successful… –Short project to recruit volunteers (Group 1) –Social event to recruit volunteers (Group 2) –Club specific activity to recruit volunteers (Group 3) 2 min

Volunteers ACTIVITY: ROLE PLAY You are a Volunteer Coordinator. You have noticed a person who has been coming to the club quite frequently for about 6 weeks. They’ve been on the touchline watching a few games but they don’t say a lot. You need more volunteers at the club. Can you hook them? Make your approach… 6 min

Volunteers ACTIVITY: FEEDBACK What worked well to recruit the volunteer? What would you do differently to recruit the volunteer?

Volunteers 1 Create the right mindset 2 Really get to know people 3 Help people feel comfortable 5 Find the right role for the right person 6 Grow your own talent 4 Use the right approach 7 Say Thank you

Volunteers SOME CLASSIC MISTAKES shared by real rugby volunteer coordinators Don’t… persuade someone to the wrong role for them - they will quit expect too much time from a person complain about how difficult a role is and then ask someone to do it! use jargon or you will turn off some people overload a person with too many roles make roles too complicated fail to offer support and training have too many meetings forget to give recognition

Volunteers SOME CLASSIC MISTAKES shared by real rugby volunteer coordinators Don’t… say the role is simple, while another club officer says it is hard say “Good, we want more women to do the cooking” speak to people once and expect you will get 20 volunteers rush in over enthusiastically - it will scare people off start your welcome booklet with the names of 167 vice presidents allow one person to have too many roles “I can’t possibly do what they do”

Volunteers VRUGBY vRugby aims to create over 3,744 new opportunities during a 3 year programme from 2008 to 2011 for young people aged to volunteer in Rugby Union. Teams of young volunteers will take part in a short-term ‘bite size projects’. Example: Car Wash, Raffle, Clear up days, marketing club in the schools, tournaments etc. Benefits – Stash, expenses, training awards

Volunteers ACTIVITY: PLAN Volunteer Recruitment Plan - consider what would best suit your club… –What volunteers do you need? –Who do you want to target? –What ‘option’ would work for you? –When would be the ideal time to recruit? –How will you make your plan succeed?

Volunteers VOLUNTEER OBJECTIVE 2009/10 Train and equip ~200 existing Volunteer Coordinators to recruit ~2,000 new volunteers
