Imagine standing in a sea of khaki and white, desperate to find your friend. It’s your first day of high school and you’re lost, unable to distinguish one drone from the rest. This is what the hallways would be like if supporters of school uniforms get their way. They say uniforms decrease school violence and bridges the class divide, but they bring about more cons than pros. Therefore, schools should not have school uniforms because they prevent creativity, they are expensive, and they limit individuality.

Is it a school’s job to make everyone a robot who looks and acts the way school officials think they should, or should we be encouraging students to embrace their strengths and uniqueness?

THINK CRITICALLY School uniforms would be detrimental to student individuality and creativity, and they would put an unnecessary burden on families with smaller incomes. If we choose school uniforms, we are suggesting that schools should be factories where every students must be put in a mold and cast out to go to college. These uniforms imply that there is only one way to be a student, one way to be successful in school, in an era where educators are taught to appeal to students’ unique strengths and get them college or career ready— whichever path they choose.

CALL TO ACTION School uniforms would be detrimental to student individuality and creativity, and they would put an unnecessary burden on families with smaller incomes. We need to say no to school uniforms and, instead, promote an atmosphere of sensitivity to students’ unique strengths and weaknesses. We must make sure school is a place where every student can be themselves and find success!
