2 Topic Sentence- First, What is your first point or what is the Character Like Initially? Connect to the topic and people. This sentence should summarize what you intend to prove in this paragraph. Why is this significant or what is the character’s initial goal? Proof: Discuss: Motivation: Why has the author presented this or why does the character want this? Proof: Discuss: Behavior: Why has the author presented this in this specific way or how does the character behave? How would you describe his/her initial behavior? Give a specific example that proves this: Discussion: Behavior to Goal- Will this behavior lead the author or the character to his/ her goal? Why/ Why not? Provide specific proof, refer to a scene, or analyze a symbol or figure of speech that will support this. Generalization About People: At this stage, what point is the author making about the topic through his character? *Revisit theme. Transition to the next paragraph. Create a bridge from this paragraph to the next by connecting your discussion of this character in this paragraph to what will be shown in the next. First Paragraph

3 Introduce your second point or summarize the Character’s MAIN Struggle. What is the main obstacle that stands in the character’s way? Don’t forget to connect to topic and people! This sentence should summarize what you intend to prove in this paragraph. What is significant about your second point or explain why this struggle exists. Second Paragraph First Support/ Obstacle/Example Second Support/ Obstacle/Example Third Obstacle/Example Identify the Support/ obstacle/example and explain what happens: How does the character respond to this support/obstacle/exa mple INITIALLY Provide a Quotation that supports this: Analysis Time: Discuss what this reaction shows in detail. Does it reveal a specific weakness? Remember to explore the “what if” of the character and people. Connect your analysis to the topic. Generalization About People: At this stage, what point is the author making about the topic through his character? Transition to the next paragraph. Create a bridge from this paragraph to the next by connecting your discussion of this character in this paragraph to what will be shown in the next. Conclude by explaining how this point has aided in the author's development of the theme or how these conflicts have helped the character change or grow.

4 Summarize the third point of your argument or refer to what the character has learned, realized or become. Cater this sentence to the topic and people. This sentence should summarize what you intend to prove in this paragraph. Outline your third point for development or explain if the character is able or unable to resolve the conflict or struggle. MAKE SURE YOU EXPLAIN WHY this is significant. ** There are a series of events or details that are important at the end of the story; how do these events/details shed light on what we need to understand about the character? Choose 2-3 of these details or events and use them as the points that will prove that your argument is true. Make sure you provide textual evidence and discussion. Does it reveal a specific weakness or strength or realization? Remember to explore the “what if” of the character and people. Connect your analysis to the topic. Given the experience of the character, what point is the author making about the topic? What does he/she want the reader to understand about people?

5 Create and opening sentence that is interesting and is connected to the point you’ve made throughout the essay – in other words, make some attempt to remind the reader of your INTRO hook; you’ve come ‘full circle’ Restate Protagonist’s Final Realization or the author’s intent or purpose: Try to be fresh and not repetitive. Conclude your discussion by making a final statement about what he/she realizes Restate what your entire essay proven about the topic. Bring your idea back to the generalized idea your presented in your theme statement. Conclusion
