Understanding Your Learning Style Discussion What do you already know about learning styles? What is your learning style and how does knowing it help you in school? What do you want to know about learning styles/your learning style?

Visual Learners Relate best to information that is written (ie Visual Learners Relate best to information that is written (ie. notes, diagrams and pictures) Study tips: Always take notes, even if you have been given printed materials. Don’t just listen, you need to look at the study materials and directions. Use or make your own charts, maps, notes and flashcards. Practice visualizing or picturing words and concepts in your head. Write everything down for frequent and quick visual reference.

Auditory Learners Relate most effectively to the spoken word. Tend to listen to lectures, then take notes afterward or rely on printed notes. May find it helpful to read written information aloud. Study tips: Read your assignments and study materials aloud Even if you feel a little silly at first—record yourself reading your notes Sit at the front of the classroom where you can hear well.

Tactile Learners Prefer a hands-on approach Learn best through touch and movement. Learn skills by imitation and practice. Study tips: Type your notes Using real objects or act out reading assignments Role-play

Pay Attention and Take Notes Tip #2: Pay Attention and Take Notes

Note Taking Skills Record Reduce Recite Reflect Review, Review, Review!

Note Taking Skills RECORD: Take notes in class by identifying the main points, write down examples or math problems. Heading: Date, Class/subject , Chapter #, Page #’s, etc.

Note Taking Skills REDUCE: After the class, summarize what you have learned using key words or phrases. Write down questions that you may have for the teacher. Don’t worry about writing every word your teacher says. Summarize!

Note Taking Skills RECITE: Talk aloud! Review from your memory what you have learned. Create your own examples or memorization techniques.

Note Taking Skills REFLECT: Think it over! How is this relevant to what you have learned already? Make connections that jog your memory!

Note Taking Skills REVIEW: Go back! Go over the notes you took before reading new material. Study with friends (if that complements your learning style) before every test (NOT 15 minutes before!)

Complete Your Homework Tip #3 Complete Your Homework

Complete Your Homework 1. What are some things that make people not get their homework done? 2. Why do you think some people are able to do their homework? 3. When/where do you do homework? How long does it take you to get your homework done?

Complete Your Homework When Should I Do My Homework? Around the same time every day. Don’t wait until just before bed.

Complete Your Homework Where Should I Do My Homework? A quiet place. Away from the TV and telephone. A place with a comfortable chair and desk.

Complete Your Homework How Will I Remember What Homework I Have? Get a homework notebook/planner. Write your assignments in a planner. Check with the teacher ahead of time if you have questions about an assignment.

Complete Your Homework What if I don’t understand my homework? Review your homework assignments before leaving school. Ask your teacher if you have questions. Attend tutoring. Use online resources (ex: Khan Academy, Tutor.com)

Complete Your Homework Be sure to develop a system for making sure your homework is turned in! (ie: Put your homework in your binder , put your binder in your backpack, then put your backpack by the front door, etc.)

(You can start by organizing your notebook) Tip # 4 Be Well Prepared For Class Get organized! (You can start by organizing your notebook)

Organized Notebook Supplies: 3 ring binder Calendar/planner Dividers with tabs Sheet protectors Pens and pencils Place all work from each class behind the correct tab
