2 Study Skills are Important!!!!
Learn to study the right way and improve your understanding, grades, and cut down on time spent studying so you have more free time!!!

4 Classroom Study Skills:

5 Bring paper, pencil, book, homework, red pen
Be Prepared for Class: Bring paper, pencil, book, homework, red pen

6 Prepare to take notes BEFORE class begins:
Get out paper and pencil. Put your name, section number, page number, and section title on your paper.

7 Copy notes from board: Copy all notes written on board.
Use meaningful abbreviations. Draw diagrams to clarify information. Use outline form or a graphic organizer. *** In math class, copy all examples and all steps from the board. ***

8 “This could be on your test”
Listen for Keywords: “This is important” “This could be on your test” “Remember” “Don’t forget”

9 Ask Questions: Ask specific questions until you understand the answer.
Get a pass to see the teacher during advisory

10 Participate in Class: Participating in class helps reinforce your understanding and allows the teacher to clarify any points that you might have confused.

11 Keep Notes Neat: Notes should be legible so you can read and understand them. At night, go back and reread your notes. Add any information needed.

12 Why review your notes??? Curve of Forgetting
The Curve of Forgetting describes how we retain or get rid of information that we take in. It's based on a one-hour lecture.

14 Begin work as soon as it is assigned:
Don’t waste time in class waiting for the bell to ring.

15 Find a quiet place to study:
Don’t sit in a noisy room or in front of the TV. Devote your time to studying…it will take less time and you will have better understanding this way.

16 Make time for homework:
You can study in a corner of a gym or in the hallway before practice. You can study in the car or on the bus.

17 Complete all homework:
Complete all homework when assigned. Don’t wait until it is late.

18 Review mistakes on your homework :
Go over homework and find out what your mistakes were and why. Learn from these mistakes.

20 Read material in the book:
Read material in the book for examples and explanations.

21 Study tables and charts:
Tables and charts are included to help summarize and explain information.

22 Summarize what you read in your own words:
Tell a friend or parent what you learned in class. This will reinforce your learning.

23 Answer review questions:
Answer chapter/section review or practice questions. If they are not assigned, review them orally with a friend or parent. (Pick a friend from class and you can both learn and have fun. It won’t seem like homework.)

24 Make flashcards to review dates, formulas, vocabulary, spelling words.

26 Study for Tests: Review your notes, homework, and book when studying for tests. Use your friends, family and internet sites (textbook related) to study.

Practice example problems from notes, book, and homework. Most books have the odd answers in the back of the book.
