1 PLANNINGTO LEARN Learning Styles

2 Aim for today: Recap the last STOP lesson
Plan how you use your study time Consider the way you learn

3 Recap: Importance of Revision
Last STOP lesson we looked at the importance of frequent, regular revision. We quickly forget most of what we learn. But if we revise soon after learning, and then regularly afterwards, we remember much more efficiently. We know that we forget most of what we learn within the first 24 hours. If we take a short amount of time to quickly revise what we have learned, we remember much more. A little bit of study, soon and often, is much better than a lot shortly before an exam. So – plan 10 minutes each day, going over what was learned that day.

4 Recap: Study Timetable
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday 4:00  STUDY  Tutoring  Bikes 4:30 STUDY 5:00  Swimming 5:30 6:00  Karate  DINNER 6:30  Youth Gr 7:00  H & A H & A 7:30 DINNER 8:00 8:30 9:00 9:30 How did you go? You took time to create a Study Timetable. You 1. Blocked in commitments, such as training, tutoring or music lessons. 2. Blocked out family commitments, such as dinner or baby sitting. 3. Filled in any things you regularly liked to do, such as TV shows or chatting with friends. 4. Chose four hours in the week to study. How did your first attempt go? Talk to the people around you.

5 Study Scaffold You’ve committed to an hour, but knowing what to do with that hour can be difficult. Here is a suggestion. We often think that an hour is a long time to put aside for study. But knowing what to do with the hour is often the key. This scaffold is only one way you can divide you hour.

6 Study Scaffold 1. First 10 minutes: What did you learn today?
The first section – Reflections – is the revision stuff we looked at last STOP lesson. The goal is to quickly remember your day. What did you do each lesson? Firstly, consider the topic you are currently covering. Then, remember one thing you learned that period.

7 Study Scaffold 2. Check your diary. What is due?
For the next section needs you to know what you have due. This is the time to check your diary. Not just what is due tomorrow, but over the next couple of weeks. Then work your way through them. You don’t have to complete them in one go. You might work on one section, 10 minutes and then move on. 2. Check your diary. What is due?

8 Study Scaffold 3. Choose one or two topics to revise.
When you’ve completed everything that’s due, study. Probably only one or two topics each time. We will be spending time looking at what study is. 3. Choose one or two topics to revise. This might be something like summarising notes, drawing mind maps or making flashcards.

9 Study Scaffold 4. Reading and Mathletics
If you have time left – regular reading and Mathletics. You have been told repeatedly about the importance of reading regularly at home. Like any skill, regular practise is needed to improve. The level you are expected to read increases throughout high school – and life – and so you need to continually improve your reading. 4. Reading and Mathletics If you have time left, spend time reading or using Mathletics.

10 3 Learning Styles

11 3 Learning Styles Visual Auditory Kinaesthetic
Visual learners learn best when they see something, for example, pictures, diagrams, films and videos or demonstrations. Auditory Auditory learners are more interested in learning through spoken words. They prefer to learn by listening to their lecturer or teacher or other students. Kinaesthetic Kinaesthetic learners prefer to being involved in activities. They need to apply the information and make it their own by constructing something or practising a technique or skill. There are many ways to look at the way you learn – this is just one. It is useful to think about the way you learn best so that you can choose study techniques that will be the most effective. It is also helpful to know what you find difficult, that way you are aware of lessons you will find difficult, and need extra effort.

12 Knowing Me? http://teachertools.londongt.org/?page=VAK
The online survey is far better than the paper survey. There are plenty more available online, this is just my favourite because it gives the results as percentages in each, not just your dominant learning style.

13 Knowing Me? This is my results page. You can see from my profile my dominant learning style is visual. These are the techniques I will use most when studying. Lucky for me, my kinaesthetic and auditory are not too bad, so I can use some of those techniques too.

14 Study Tips for your Learning Style
Around the room are posters which suggest study techniques for each learning style. Grab you student planner and turn to the notes pages. Go to the poster for your dominant learning style and write down some of the study tips you think will be helpful for you.

15 Study Expectations Website
If you would like a copy of these posters or anything else in this lesson, it is available on the study expectations website.
