CHAPTER 9 VEHICLE INFORMATION

TITLES A title is a document that states who owns the vehicle. New cars titles are done at the dealership. Used cars- fill in the back of the title with the buyer’s name, address, signature, date of sale, odometer reading, sale price and the seller’s name, address, and signature. Must bring title to DMV within 10 days to transfer ownership Moving into state- title and register w/in 60 days

REGISTRATION You register your car so that the state knows exactly what vehicle (make, model, year, VIN) belongs to you. You register your car with the state so it can legally be on the road. A car must be registered in order to get license plates. To register a car you must be at least 17 years old Show proof of insurance and a policy number Show proof of ownership (certificate of sale for a new vehicle or the title for a used vehicle)

Registration

REGISTRATION RENEWALS Renewals of current registrations are mailed out 2 months prior to expiration. Fill out form and return with payment or complete on online Renewals are good for one year New car registrations are good for four years

LICENSE PLATES Need plates on the FRONT and BACK of your car. Trailers, motorized bikes, and motorcycles only get ONE plate. Plates must be lit at night, not obstructed by the license plate holder and visible from 50 ft. If obstructed, the fine could be up to $100.

License Plate and Disabled Plates Facts/Information Report lost or stolen plates to the police immediately. Bring damaged plates to the MVC for replacement. Return unused plates to the MVC. GET A RECEIPT AND KEEP THE RECEIPT!!! Handicapped plates and rearview mirror placards are available to the person without fee. Person must have a doctor document the disability.

VEHICLE INSPECTION New cars must be inspected 4 yrs after the purchase. After that, your car must be inspected every 2 yrs. Owners of a used car must take the vehicle for inspection within 14 days after the registration expires or accept the time left on the previous owner’s inspection sticker. You need current insurance and registration to get the car inspected.

Inspection results and exemptions A car that passes inspection will receive a sticker that is placed in the front window. Those who don’t pass have until the end of the next month to make repairs and have the car re-inspected. Historic cars (25 yrs or older with “QQ” license plates) are exempt from inspection.

Insurance AUTO INSURANCE IS MANDATORY IN NJ!!! Must have LIABILITY Insurance. This insurance covers the other motorist, but not you. When issued an insurance card, keep it in the vehicle. You will have to show proof of insurance before inspection, at an accident scene, or if pulled over by the police
