1 Chapter 9 Vehicle Information Fall 2014

2 Objectives:  Students will know requirements for vehicle title & registration  Students will understand vehicle inspection, license plates & insurance

3 Vehicle Title, Registration & Insurance  New Jersey residents who buy a new or used vehicle must:  Title, Register  Insure it before driving the car on public roads  Motor vehicle liability insurance is MANDATORY in the State of New Jersey

4 Vehicle Title, Registration & Insurance  Lemon Law: requires that his/her vehicle to be titled and registered within 60 days; sooner, if the out-of-state registration expires before then  Initial Registration of Vehicle  Valid for 4 years  All other registrations are typically valid for 1 year

5 License Plates  Motorists will receive TWO matching license plates upon registering a vehicle  One plate is provided when registering a trailer, moped, or motorcycle

6 Vehicle Inspection  All gasoline fueled vehicles, more than 5 years old, registered in NJ must pass state emissions inspections EVERY 2 YEARS at a state inspection facility or a state-licensed private inspection facility

7 Vehicle Inspection  New gasoline-fueled vehicles must pass their first MVC inspection 5 years after they are initially registered  To be eligible for inspection, all motorists must bring a valid driver license and valid NJ registration & insurance documents for the vehicle to be inspected

8 Insurance  Motor vehicle liability insurance is mandatory in the State of New Jersey  Every vehicle registered in NJ must have liability insurance  Type & cost of insurance coverage can vary.

9 Insurance  A New Jersey Insurance Identification Card will be provided for each vehicle insured under a policy  Insurance Card must remain in the vehicle with driver at all times

10 Insurance  Driving with an uninsured vehicle can result in:  Fines  Community Service  License & Registration Suspensions  Insurance Surcharges

11 Insurance Fraud  If a person commits insurance fraud by providing false information to an insurance company while making a claim or submitting an insurance application  The Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor can file criminal charges that can result in incarceration  Fines up to $15,000 for each violation
