2 Title and Registration New Jersey residents who buy a new or used vehicle must title, register, and insure it before driving it on public roads New Jersey law states a vehicle classified under the Lemon Law must have that classification on the title If a motorist moves into this state, the law requires his/her vehicle to be titled and registered within 60 days

3 Title and Registration Initial registration for a brand new vehicle is valid for 4 years all other vehicles are valid for 1 year In New Jersey you must be at least 17 years old to register a vehicle

4 New Jersey Lemon Laws and the federal Lemon Law provide for compensation to New Jersey consumers of defective ◦ Automobiles and trucks ◦ Motorcycles ◦ RV’s ◦ Boats To qualify under the New Jersey Lemon Law or the federal Lemon Law, you must generally have a product that suffered multiple repair attempts under the manufacturer’s factory warranty

7 License Plates Facts 2 Matching license plates issued to every car in NJ For passenger vehicles one plate should be attached on the front of the vehicle and the other to the rear of the vehicle at least 12 inches but less than 48 inches above the ground Both plates must be clean and visible from 50 feet at night If license plate covers or holders obscure or conceal any lettering on the license plate a motorist will be subject to a fine of up to $100

8 License Plates Facts Report to the police, keep copy of report Replace lost or damaged plates within 24 hours at the MVC and turn in old plates to MVC in person or by mail Old plates can be transferred to another vehicle at any MVC if you do not wish to transfer them the old plates must be turned in to the MVC.

9 License Plates Facts If a motorist terminates vehicle insurance the plates must be returned to the MVC Valid plates should be placed on a vehicle  Forged or counterfeit plates on a motor vehicle will result in:  a fine up to $500  60 days imprisonment  Up to 6 months license suspension

10 Vehicle Inspection With the exception of new vehicles in New Jersey all gasoline-fueled vehicles must pass safety and emissions inspections every 2 years New gasoline-fueled vehicles must pass safety and emissions inspections every 5 years after they are initially registered

11 Vehicle Inspection All motorists must bring a valid driver license and valid New Jersey registration and insurance documents for the vehicle to be inspected Motorists can go to either a state inspection station or a state-licensed private inspection facility (PIF) Moving to New Jersey from another state, you must have your vehicle inspected within 14 days after registering it

12 Inspection Test Results A vehicle will receive a certificate of approval when they pass inspection If a vehicle fails inspection the owner will have up to one month from the last day of the month indicated on the inspection sticker to make the necessary repairs and return to station Vehicles overdue for inspection do not receive additional time to make necessary repairs

13 New Jersey Car Insurance All motorists must have Liability Insurance in the state of New Jersey An Insurance Card will be issued by the motorist’s insurance carrier for each vehicle insured by a policy The Insurance Card will be provided to each vehicle insured and must remain in the vehicle when it is being operated by the motorist

14 New Jersey Car Insurance Motorist must display this card prior to car inspected, when involved in a car accident, and when stopped by law enforcement for traffic violations or road checks Driving with no insurance will result in fines, community service, license/registration suspensions, and insurance surcharges

15 New Jersey Insurance Fraud OFFICE OF INSURANCE FRAUD PROSECUTOR (OIFP) If person commits insurance fraud providing false information to an insurance company while making a claim or submitting an insurance application  OIFP file charges resulting in incarceration  Impose $15,000 in civil fines for each violation  Loss of driver license
