Unit #1: English 10 Plot and Setting

Plot Plot : the sequence of events that make up a story Basic Situation (exposition): The basic situation presents a main character who usually desires something and then insinuates a conflict Complications: The first conflict arises and begins the rising action. External: Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature Internal: Man vs. Self Climax: The stories most exciting or suspenseful moment, when something happens that decides the outcome of the conflict. Resolution (denouement): The problems are resolved and the story ends. Last piece of new information revealed which usually coincides with the theme.

Setting Setting: indication of where or when (time frame) the action takes place Setting puts the reader in the shoes of the character Gives feeling of being in the situation with the characters Utilize similes, metaphors, figurative language, personification Includes: customs, how they live, dress, eat, behave etc. Setting can have a direct emotional effect on a story’s atmosphere or mood. http://www.vocabulary.com/lists/202236#view=notes Setting can also help express tone, or a writer’s attitude toward a subject or character. http://valenciacollege.edu/east/academicsuccess/eap/documents/tonewor ds.pdf
