Warm Up 5 Minute Brain Break: Must stay in seat and talk quietly. Phones will be taken if out. Attendance and Role will be Taken By Instructor Your friends parents are separating. He/She is not surprised because they have been arguing a lot lately. However, he still feels hurt by their decision. He/She is also worried about his family will get by financially without both of his parents living at home. The constant feelings of sadness and uncertainty are starting to affect other aspect of his life. Tony is tired all the time has withdrawn from his friend, and has lost his appetite. All he want to do is stay home alone and sleep. Show your friend empathy and support during this difficult time. What advice might you give him/her?

Understanding and Coping with Anxiety Occasional anxiety is a normal, manageable reaction to many short-term, stressful situations. What is anxiety? Anxiety – the condition of feeling uneasy or worried about what may happen.

Understanding Depression Depression – is a prolonged feeling of helplessness, hopelessness, and sadness. Depression is a serious medical condition that may require medical help. Types: Major Depression – intense and can last for weeks or months. Mild Depression – has less severe symptoms, but can last for years.

Causes and Effects of Depression Changes in thinking. May have trouble concentrating and making decisions. Changes in feeling. May experience apathy, or a lack of strong feeling or interest, or concern. Changes in behavior. May become emotional, and they may begin eating too littler or too much. Trouble sleeping and may seem tired.

Mental Disorders Mental Disorder – an illness of the mind that can affect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a person preventing him or her from leading a happy, healthful, and productive life.

Types of Mental Disorders Anxiety Disorder – a condition in which real or imagined fears are difficult to control. Example – phobia , obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder. Impulse Control Disorders – people who cannot resist the urge to hurt themselves or others. Eating Disorders – can lead to unhealthful weight loss and death.

Types of Mental Disorders Conduct Disorder – people who in engage in patterns of behavior in which the right of others or basic social rules are violating. Examples include stealing, cruelty, lying, aggression Schizophrenia – people lose contact with reality. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, and thought disorders. Personality Disorders – people who are unable to regulate their emotions.

Suicide Prevention Certain risk factors increase thoughts of suicide and suicide attempts. For some people stress can cause alienation. What is alienation? Alienation – feeling isolated and separated from everyone else.

Suicide Risk Factors Suicide – is the act of intentionally taking one’s own life. It is the third leading cause of death for teens ages 15 to 19. Each year, 17 percent of all teens in this age group will consider suicide. More than half will actually attempt it.

Strategies to Prevent Suicide Initiate a meaningful conversation. Show interest, compassion, patience, and understanding. Show support and ask questions. Remind the person that all problems have solutions, and that suicide is not the answer. Try to persuade the person to seek help. Encourage the person to talk with a parent, counselor or trusted adult.
