1 Group Discussion Questions 1) Come up with your own definition of mental disorders. Discuss then write. 2) List as many mental disorders as you can think of. Write them down. 3) For each mental disorder on your list, have the person who contributed that disorder try to explain to the group what it is. Don’t have to write this.

Discuss and then make a list. 5) Considering what you already know about mental disorders, where has your information come from? 7 Mental disorder An illness of the mind that can affect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a person, preventing him/her from leading a happy, healthful, & productive life Many do not seek help due to the stigma – a mark of shame or disapproval that results in an individual being shunned or rejected by others

8 Types of Mental Disorders Anxiety disorder – a condition in which real or imagined fears are difficult to control ◦ See Figure 5.3 Pg. 119 Impulse Control Disorders ◦ See Figure 5.4 Pg. 120 Eating Disorders – Ch. 11

9 Types of Mental Disorders Mood Disorders – an illness that involves mood extremes that interfere w/ everyday living Conduct Disorders – patterns of behavior in which the rights of others or basic social rules are violated Schizophrenia Personality Disorders

10 Suicide Prevention Suicide is the 3 rd leading cause of death for teens 15 – 19. More than 90% of those who commit suicide are suffering from depression or mental disorder or have a history of abusing alcohol/drugs. Cluster suicides account for about 5% of all teen suicides

11 Vocabulary Alienation- feeling isolated and separated from everyone else Suicide- the act of intentionally taking one’s own life Cluster Suicides- a series of suicides occurring within a short period of time and involving several people in the same school or community

13 Getting Help Many mental health problems require help from a professional There are many sources of help: ◦ At school – counselor, nurse, teacher, social worker, psychologist ◦ Community – clergy, hotlines, health clinics

14 Treatment Methods Psychotherapy- an ongoing dialogue between a patient and a mental health professional Behavior Therapy- process that focuses on changing unwanted behaviors through rewards and reinforcements Cognitive Therapy- method designed to identify and correct distorted thinking patterns that can lead to feelings and behaviors that may be troublesome, self- defeating or self-destructive

15 Treatment Methods Family Therapy- helping the family function in more positive and constructive ways by exploring patterns in communication and providing support and education Group Therapy- treating a group of people who have similar problems Drug Therapy- use of certain medications to treat or reduce the symptoms of a mental disorder
