Data collection and metadata population – harvesting EMODnet Chemistry 3 – Plenary Group meeting – Madrid, Spain 29 January 2019) Dick M.A. Schaap dick@maris.nl MARIS

Approach for chemistry data gathering Continuation of approach of gathering and populating relevant measurements data into the SeaDataNet CDI Data Discovery and Access service with CDI metadata format and ODV data format; use of MIKADO, NEMO and OCTOPUS tools Focus on data concerning: Eutrophication (nutrients, chlorophyll and oxygen) Contaminants Marine micro litter Geographical scope expanded with Barents Sea Data scope expanded with riverine input of nutrients Also metadata and data collected for beach litter and seafloor litter via other approach 2

Chemistry CDI data discovery and access service 3

CDI matrix of number of CDIs per substance and MSFD region

Chemistry CDI service – Coverage (28 January 2019) CDI records and data sets: June 2014: 661095; June 2016: 807959; Feb 2018: 939400; Jan 2019:  991787 European coverage (N80, W-30; N20, E45): 864424 65 Data Centres 32 Countries 359 Originators 1868 – 2019 years 84% unrestricted 16% to be negotiated 5

Total CDI entries for EMODnet Chemistry (991787) 6

CDI entries added for Eutrophication buffer in EMODnet Chemistry 3 project (93580) 7

CDI entries updated for Eutrophication buffer in EMODnet Chemistry 3 project (71217) 8

CDI entries added for Contaminants buffer in EMODnet Chemistry 3 project (18905) 9

CDI entries updated for Contaminants buffer in EMODnet Chemistry 3 project (13796) 10

CDI entry activity All data centres in the EMODnet Chemistry consortium have undertaken activities for extra population! However not all data centres have enriched (a subset) of their existing CDIs with information about projects and data quality control (see guideline: http://nodc.ogs.trieste.it/doi/documents/Updated-Guidelines- CDI_EMODnetChemistry3.pdf Example of CDI record: http://emodnet- chemistry.maris2.nl/v_cdi_v3/print_ajax.asp?n_code=2498459 Quality Info included by only: BODC, CNR-ISMAR, IHPT, and RBINS EDMERP relations included by most data centres for subsets 11

Example enriched CDI record EDMERP relation QC Method documented 12

Marine litter data (2001-2018) Discovery Parameter Datasets Sea-floor litter abundance 12,777 Beach litter abundance 6,893 Micro-litter in water bodies 131 TOTAL 19,801

Harvesting of CDI’s Harvesting of Eutrophication and Contaminants regional data collections has taken place using the CDI Buffer system For the defined MSFD regions Arctic ocean - Barents sea - Norwegian sea – Greenland sea - Icelandic waters Greater North Sea - Celtic Sea – Faroes Baltic Sea Iberian peninsula - Macronesia - Bay of Biscay Mediterranean Sea Black Sea - Sea of Marmara - Sea of Azov 14
