Emodnet Chemistry 2 Lot First Steering Committee Aula Magna Androna Baciocchi, Trieste university, 5th June 2013

Management (WP0) and administrative issues: The Service Contract, the CA and the Subcontracts, Mailing lists and extranet, SC members,...

Workflow for the 1st year: Regional data pools and Leaders, Sea regions definition (MSFD, Members states, EEA, SDN2 definitions), Evaluation of new products – Tools for coastal visualization → specific request! – Tools environmental assessment, Data-products validation (maps yearly validation process with local experts and/or Expert workshop) Next meeting (yearly full group and 6-months SC)

Inputs for WG-DIKE meeting, Copenhagen, 4th of July 2013: Iain invitation mail for all the Emodnet lots coordinators, Discussion about which aspects highlight during the Copenhagen meeting, Neils's mail about the need to participate at the WG-DIKE meeting and to fill within 21/06/2013 WISE marine template (that basically splits the workflow into 4 compartments that are general to whatever descriptor/data model/region and allow all of the components to be described in a matrix)

WISE marine templates to fill within 21/06/2013, action list and roles: Neil's mail about challenge to fill it out for a particular MSFD descriptor(s) and region (it would be good to have a Med/Black sea example for instance), Which Regions we need to describe for first--> suggetsed Mediterranean and/or Black Sea.

Discussion about Emodnet Central portal: the European Commission, Directorate General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries accepted (on 18 October 2012) the proposal Flemish Government (23 December 2011) to enlarge the International Cooperation of the Flanders Marine Institute, by supporting EMODNET in this way: host the EMODNET Secretariat Office operating for International Institutions or Bodies at the InnovOcean site in Oostende, Belgium. The offer includes besides the installation of offices: to construct and operate a single EMODnet Portal to visualize and provide access to the thematic data products that are being build and managed in the individual thematic projects; organize user services to facilitate and increase access and usage of the EMODnet portal. EMODnet central portal technical meeting of 23 November 2012 at DG-MARE; Drafted a design document with the general objectives and functional description of the portal; Decided to share data products representative of the different lots and directly linked to the data(CDIs)--> for Chemistry Lot Time series plots.

Discussion about Emodnet Central portal: Recently (last week, end of May) requested by VLIZ a feedback from the Lots coordinators by email ; Points highlighted during recent discussion by email exchange (OGS/Maris/Gher): almost all the existent Emodnet portals are OGC compliant and use WMS to visualize data products; the central portal should be an entry point for the users that shows mainly a preview of what the Lots are handling and then have to redirect to the single portals; Thematic portals flexible in their approach and development and not hindered by central constraints; VLIZ will soon start to work to set up a central portal prototype and lots should decide which WMS layers to provide for the test of the central portal; data products that will be shown should be directly linked to the data used to produce them. (for Chemistry TS plots!) Sextant will be used as products catalogue.

Discussion about Emodnet Central portal: IT infrastructure of central EMODnet Portal and links with thematic portals provided by VLIZ

Improvements of Chemistry Lot tools and services, action plan: Improvements of web search interfaces: More analytic parameter search criteria --> from P081 to P021 (or P031) for CDI search; Geographic search criteria --> soon C16 as active search criteria to be followed by C19 (with definition of polygons according to MSFD Regions)?; Sextant status of development and tuning with DivadoXML to load Interpolated Maps metadata. Improvement of TS plots: With the expected increase of points, is the present TS visualization appropriate?

Improvements of Chemistry Lot parameter vocabulary P01 : From Pilot Project experience: – P011 managed alone the complexity of the chemical parameters metadata containing in a single term information related to: Parameter Matrix Measurement method Basis

Improvements of Chemistry Lot parameter vocabulary P01 : Short time develepment: – Tool for a more transparent and flexible management of P01 terms, – Netmar P25 like terms aggregation. Mid-long time develepment: – Definition of O&M and SensorML profiles for chemical data. BODC proposal for a specific technical meeting, When? Who?

Weakness raised in the EU tender evaluation: Which steps to improve user friendliness of portal and services!? Portal → ??? CDI mask → improvement of search criteria as highlighted by SDN2 user panel and Chemistry Lot users (P021 and C16/C19); Ocean Browser → TS plots visualization with the increase of collected data!?; Sextant → have to be operative to provide efficient access to products;...other suggestions!?

Chemistry Lot datasets and Data Pubblication (DOI) Following guidelines provided by IODE: http://www.iode.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article &id=110&Itemid=129 OGS will encourage to assign permanent identifiers (DOI) to the Chemistry Lot environmental datasets. This : ensuring dataset is frozen, ensuring dataset has enough supporting metadata to be used by others to provide a full citation credit to the data collection efforts from data originators and data managers.
