EMODNET Preparatory Actions Progress meeting for ur-EMODNET preparatory actions, 24 November 2009 Presentation of Progress Chemical Lot Alessandra Giorgetti (OGS) ‏

Work done - dates The chemical lot started on June 4th, 2009 Kick-off meeting, 2-3 July 2009 in Trieste Get agreement on project start-up (action list) ‏ SeaDataNet Technical Task Team meeting, 3-4 September 09 Technical solution for data and metadata collection and validation Promotion of Emodnet to EIONET workshop (5 Nov 2009) and ICAN workshop (16-20 Nov 2009) ‏ Document produced included in the progress reports and extranet (pwd) ‏ Progress meeting for ur-EMODNET preparatory actions, 24 November 2009

Progress meeting for ur-EMODNET preparatory actions, 24 November 2009 EMODNET will use SeaDataNet V1 infrastructure: SDN Standards for data and metadata CDI mechanism to access data with data policy ODV format for data input SDN Security Services for users registrations, and SDN Delivery Services for data access and downloading DIVA software tool (Data-Interpolating Variational Analysis) to produce gridded data from row data. Error maps reflect the accuracy of the observations and their distribution, used for the assessment. SDN a key element to ensure interoperability and harmonization between the EMODNET pilots, as data and products compatibility Proposal for metadata and data collection – SDN interaction

Work done – data collection Progress meeting for ur-EMODNET preparatory actions, 24 November 2009 All partners updated the Data Inventory Data collection process has started Greater North Sea A detailed list of ICES/OSPAR stations and measurements was produced and action is started to complete it with additional data VLIZ, Belgium is preparing CDI records for 9 + 15 monitoring stations (Belgian Continental shelf + Scheldt Estuary) and configuring download manager RBINS-MUMM, Belgium expanded the inventory fields by giving more information on the data to comply with the Emodnet commitments (parameter selection) ‏

Work done – data collection … Progress meeting for ur-EMODNET preparatory actions, 24 November 2009 Black Sea NIMRD, Romania sent a list of 2.619 stations available in ODV format according to SDN and NIMRD data policy RIHMI, Obninsk, RF sent the list of stations available (pollutant) ‏ TSU, Georgia sent the list of new stations available Mediterranean spots Number of measurements of the Data Inventory are replaced by stations made available (as CDI records and ODV data files)

The Chemical parameters The chemical parameters include the groups of chemicals required for monitoring the Marine Strategy Directive: 1. synthetic compounds (e.g. priority substances under Directive 2000/60/EC that are relevant for the marine environment), i.e. pesticides, antifoulants, pharmaceuticals; 2. heavy metals; 3. radionuclides; 4. fertilisers and other nitrogen- and phosphorus-rich substances; 5. organic matter (e.g. from sewers or mariculture); 6. hydrocarbons including oil pollution. Progress meeting for ur-EMODNET preparatory actions, 24 November 2009

The Chemical parameters - Based on MSFD requirement - Time series, geographically representative - Chemicals in different matrices - 17 selected for the pilot

Progress meeting for ur-EMODNET preparatory actions, 24 November 2009 Difficulties encountered are mainly related to data release (negotiation to operation) ‏ The cooperation with EEA and Marine Conventions (OSPAR, HELCOM and BSC) is crucial for data assembling, products definition and QC/QA We need to agree on the adoption of shared standards for data, metadata, QC/QA, to ensure homogeneous and interoperable data/products High-resolution interpolated maps (DIVA NetCDF output) as GIS layers
