The Post-War World

The Aftermath: 75 million dead Horrors of the Holocaust discovered Millions of refugees/displaced persons War criminals put on trial European countries began to lose influence

Nuclear Age - The end of World War II marks the beginning of the nuclear age

What happened to Japan? Property damage, homelessness, famine Allies occupied Japan until 1952: Destroyed militarism and disbanded armed forces Created a democratic government by writing a new constitution “Economic miracle” – focused on building the economy and trading, especially with high technology

What about Germany? Divided into four different zones, occupied by the Allied Powers Eventually U.S., France, and Great Britain united their zones into West Germany (democracy) The Soviet Union’s zone became East Germany (communist)
