Cold War: Time from when the U.S. and U.S.S.R. competed for influence around the world without actually fighting. 3 Causes of Tension: U.S. Communists pull Russia out of WWI.
U.S. fears the spread of communism. There is a general lack of trust by the Americans of the Soviets during WWII, especially since Stalin had signed a Non-Aggression Pact with Hitler.

4 Causes of Tension: U.S.S.R.
The Soviets are upset the U.S. fought against them in the Russian Civil War. They are upset the U.S. did not open a western front sooner during WWII. They are upset the U.S. did not share the fact they had developed nuclear weapons.

5 Cold War Policies The U.S. practiced containment, which meant the U.S. would try to stop the spread of communism. The U.S.S.R. was concerned with protection from attack from the west, so they set up satellite nations in Eastern Europe.

6 Division of Germany After World War II, Germany was divided into four zones. Each zone was to be controlled by one of the four Allied Powers: France, Great Britain, U.S., and the USSR.

7 Division of Germany The Soviet Union declared East Germany to be an independent country-- The German Democratic Republic. Great Britain, France, and the United States joined their zones together to form West Germany, a.k.a. the Federal Republic of Germany.

8 The Arms Race As a result the U.S. and the Soviet Union developing nuclear weapons, both sides engaged in an arms race, building huge stockpiles of nuclear weapons. Many nations of the world allied themselves with either the United States or Soviet Union. Both countries tried to exert their influence on developing countries around the world.
