Product Design: Graphical Design 2

Objectives: To consider the effective use use of colour in good graphical design The impact of layout and the overall effect How fonts can enhance or detract from readability The presentation method Consistency The importance of corporate image

The effective use of colour-recap Choosing the correct colour scheme can make a big difference to the quality of a multimedia product. Use bright colours if you want to grab the users’ attention Use neutral colours if you need the users to read, and learn from your product

Contrast The amount of difference between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. Black on white – the contrast is high, the text is easy to read In this example, the contrast is low Images can be changed by adjusting the level of contrast.

Patterns Patterns can be used to good effect to make things stand out Text over patterns is not always good Be careful – it is possible to over use patterns! This is actually quite difficult to read!

Background and borders Borders can be used to make things stand out or to separate items Sometimes borders can be used to make frames around things when you need a visual effect.
