English Class Options for 2018-2019

10th Grade Options English 10 Honors English 10 Academic Generally, students who earned a B- or above in English 9 Honors do well in this course. Students coming from English 9 Academic who had a 95 or higher generally make this transition well, if they have strong writing skills, excellent work habits, and the ability to work independently. This course is for students whose reading and writing skills are at- or close to grade level.

11th Grade Options English 11 Academic English 11 Honors AP Language and Composition

English 11 Academic This course is for students whose reading and writing skills are at- or close to grade level. Focus on American Literature Prepares students for the End of Course Writing SOL and Reading SOL (both of these are graduation requirements)

English 11 Honors This course is for students reading and writing above grade level, with strong work habits and the ability to work independently. Generally, students who earned a B- or above in English 10 Honors or an A in English 10 Academic do well in this course. There is a good deal of reading outside of class (usually 50-70 pages a week)

AP Language and Composition This is a college-level course that focuses on writing, the analysis of non-fiction texts, rhetoric, and American Literature. Students who score well on the AP exam at the end of the year can earn college credit (it counts as English 111/Freshmen Comp in college) Students who enjoy reading challenging texts and are strong writers are successful in this class. Generally, students with a 90 or above in English 10 Honors do well in this course.

12th Grade Options English 12 Academic English 12 Dual Enrollment AP Literature and Composition

English 12 Academic This course is for students whose reading and writing skills are at- or close to grade level. It focuses on more fundamental reading, writing, and research skills, preparing students for both the workplace or college. The literature centers around World Literature.

English 12 Dual Enrollment You must pass the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) in April to be eligible to take this course. This is two college courses offered through NVCC, beginning with Freshmen Comp (English 111) in the fall. You must pass English 111 in the fall semester to be eligible to take English 112 in the spring Both courses focus primarily on the writing skills you will need to be successful in college Students earn 6 college credits that will transfer to all Virginia universities and most colleges outside the state. However, the grades you get in these courses will become part of your college transcript that goes with you as move on in life.

English 12 Dual Enrollment (continued) Students generally complete a formal, multi-draft, 3-5 page paper every two weeks throughout the year (though most of the work is done in class). Generally, students who earned an 80 or higher in English 11 Honors or an 88 or higher in English 11 Academic do well in this course. Students who take AP Lang in 11th grade can take this course, but colleges may not give credit for both AP Lang and English 111.

AP Literature and Composition This is a college-level course that focuses on literary analysis and writing. This is a great course for students who love to read and discuss literature. Students who score well on the AP exam at the end of the year can earn college credit. Note: It is possible to take both AP Lit and DE English senior year.
