2 Graduation Requirements: Four years of English-eight semesters 9 th Grade-LAC I, honors or non-honors 10 Grade-LAC II, honors or non-honors 11 th Grade American Literature (honors or non- honors) or AP Literature 12 th Grade-British and World Literature (honors or non-honors) or AP Language Public Speaking & Journalism count as electives, not towards the four years of English for needed for graduation.

3 Literature, Analysis & Composition I (LAC) for 9 th grade There are five strands to this class: Literature, fiction & non-fiction, short stories, poems, plays and novels Grammar Vocabulary Composition-memoirs, persuasive, comparison & research Verbal Communication There is an honors and non-honors version of the class. The difference is several projects.

4 Literature, Analysis & Composition II (LAC) for 10 th grade There are five strands to this class: Literature, fiction & non-fiction, short stories, poems, plays and novels Grammar Vocabulary Composition-narratives, persuasive and research Verbal Communication There is an honors and non-honors version of the class. The difference is several projects.

5 American Literature for 11 th grade This class focuses on literature through time in the history of the USA. It works with the US history class. This class focuses on: Writing to prompts & a research paper Reading novels, plays, short stories and speeches Verbal communication & team work Grammar Vocabulary There is an honors and non-honors version of the class. The difference is several projects.

6 British and World Literature for 12 th grade The first semester of this class focuses on student’s exploring different literature by continent. The second semester focuses on a senior portfolio project called All about Me. This class focuses on: Writing to prompts & a research paper Reading novels, plays, short stories and speeches Verbal communication & team work Grammar Vocabulary There is an honors and non-honors version of the class. The difference is several projects.

7 AP Literature and Composition for 11 th grade This class has the potential to earn students college credit if they score a 3, 4 or 5 on the AP exam in May. Most colleges accept these scores. A score of three is not accepted for credit by all colleges. This class focuses on literary devices and analysis of literature-plays, short stories and novels. We read the following novels: Annie John by Jamica Kincaid Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald Their Eyes were watching God by Zora Neale Hurston Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare The Streetcar named Desire by Tennessee Williams Hedda Gabler by Henrik Ibsen

8 AP Language and Composition for 12 th grade This class has the potential to earn students college credit if they score a 3, 4 or 5 on the AP exam in May. Most colleges accept these scores. A score of three is not accepted for credit by all colleges. This course focuses on rhetorical devices. We have a focus on discussions that are student led and student driven. Students also read non-fiction pieces. In the fall students have a project on an editorial writer & in the spring students have a research project. They also watch the State of the Union and listen for rhetorical devices from the President of the United States of America. We call this the POTUS & the SOTU.

9 Journalism for any grade This is an offsite non-honors elective class that is a semester in length This class focuses on the aspects of modern 2.0 journalism. Students who take this class often participate in the extracurricular Newspaper Club that produces The Flex Street Post.

10 Public Speaking for any grade This is an offsite non-honors elective class that is a semester in length Students focus on the skills needed to deliver and improve a speech. They give speeches that they record and send in as audio files. They also study famous speeches. This is a good option to prepare students for the public speaking that is often needed outside of high school.
